Informative review of wide format giclee fine art color printers from ColorSpan, Roland, Iris giclee, Epson. Are you a fine art painter, digital artist, or photographer who wants to move into digital fine art giclee printing? Tips, help, and links both for the newcomer as well as for the fine art print collector or museum. What about the Epson 7500 and Epson 9500 ? We actually saw them presented at DRUPA trade show. Our recommendation is that you might wish to wait until Seybold trade show to see how they have improved. As of July they were still prototypes. Iris cornered the market on prestige fine art Giclee wide format printers, but then ColorSpan introduced the Giclee Printmaker. Now the Roland Hi-Fi wide format printer is also producing Fine Art wide format prints used in the giclee print market. Roland and

Educational Curriculum Art: Studying the Elements of COLOR Introduction
Woody Guthrie created beauty with simple lines. When he chose to use color, surprising fuschias could streak across grasses and green could blush people's faces. He embellished his writing notebooks with color, at times enriching the poetry, prose or lyrics written in black on the page, at times creating a presence of its own among the strength of Woody's words. Depending on the developmental age of the children, the use of color is often unrealistic, like Chagall or Picasso. The paintings chosen for this lesson fall into that genre. Getting Started "Man with a Hat and Scarf" evokes a smile with its jaunty placement of the hat and oppositional use of yellow and green (right hand yellow, left hand green; left scarf green, right yellow.) Children may be surprised with the way Woody used wide stroke of yellow on the face, criss-crossed by thinner streaks of green on the right half of the face. The affect is lovely and young artists may be freed to use color in creativeways. The body is not fleshed out but consists of fast, angular green with a dash of yellow. The straightforward lines in "House and Tree, Mountain in Background" leave lots of room for color. Fuschia hugs the grassline suggested at the bottom of the page and is echoed high in the sky.

USING COLOR IN THE GARDEN By Dr. Leonard Perry, Extension Professor
University of Vermont
Perhaps the one aspect of gardening that excites me the most is the aspect of color and its use in gardens and landscapes. This is a complex topic, but the basics are fairly simple. By knowing these, you can create various effects in your own garden. To begin, do you know what color really is? This will vary depending on whether you are an artist, a photographer, an electronic graphic artist, or a printer. Suffice to say here, that in all but art, color deals with lightboth absorbed and reflectedand is composed of three basic colors, plus black in the case of printers. Since garden design with color is most closely related to art, let's explore this view of color. Most people are familiar with the artists' color wheel, with the six main colors of the spokes or pie slices of the circle. The three primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Combine these, and you get the colors in between the secondary colors. So red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green, and blue and red make purple. Add black to these six basic colors and you have "shades" of a color. Add white to these six basic colors, and you have "tints" of a color, including the popular pastels. Then, of course, you can mix various combinations of the basic six to get all the other colors.

Critics. Is there a country on the planet that features more whining per column- inch or radio-hour than here? I nominate Montreal as bellyache capital of the nation, with the province of Alberta posting a strong second; but Toronto is making progress. Still, his swan song exhibition at the AGO does Alan Wilkinson proud, and though his accompanying essay doesn't quite soar, it is thoroughly informative in the historical cross-references it makes with Hepworth's life and work, the people she knew, artists she was influenced by and writers who commented on her work (including J. D. Bernal, the great socialist historian of science). It's the essay by the exhibition's other curator, Penelope Curtis, head of the Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture, that really reanimates the work on exhibition in the context of the artist's life. It all begins with carving, and a particular taste of the 1920s for small sculptural forms that carried animal and occasionally figurative evocations. Artists in Hepworth's circle found precedent for working this way in Chinese sculpture and ornaments. (What they couldn't have known about at that time was Inuit shaman carving, even smaller examples of animalier. Still, many of Hepworth's carvings from the period resemble these closely, and fascinatingly, points of resemblance to Inuit work recur right through her career; in one of her last pieces, The Family of Man from 1970, large-scale bronze, totemic sculptures are proportioned like the figurative, piled stone placement totems seen all around the Arctic. Matisse saw and produced a suite of lithographs based on "Eskimo prints," but there's no evidence that Hepworth knew this art.)
