The International Color Consortium was established in 1993 by eight industry vendors for the purpose of creating, promoting and encouraging the standardization and evolution of an open, vendor-neutral, cross-platform color management system architecture and components. The outcome of this co-operation was the development of the ICC profile specification. The intent of the International Color Consortium (R) profile format is to provide a cross-platform device profile format. Device profiles can be used to translate color data created on one device into another device's native color space. The acceptance of this format by operating system vendors allows end users to transparently move profiles and images with embedded profiles between different operating systems. This permits tremendous flexibility to both users and vendors. For example, it allows users to be sure that their image will retain its color fidelity when moved between systems and applications. Furthermore, it allows a printer manufacturer to create a single profile for multiple operating systems. The ICC specification is now widely used and has been specified in many International and other de-facto standards. It is now itself going through accreditation as an International Standard. Oak Hill Kennel The Genetics of Color In Labradors by Amy Frost Dahl, Ph.D. First published in The Retriever Journal , June/July 1998 Seeing that two of the dogs I brought in for CERF exams were black Labs, the vet's assistant started telling me about her yellow Lab bitch. She was planning to breed her bitchhad bred her before to a yellow stud, and was planning this time to use a chocolate belonging to the same owner. We talked at length, and finally I asked her if she knew that the breeding she planned (chocolate x yellow) would almost certainly produce black puppies. "Why yes," she answered, "I got six black and six yellow last time." In this article I shall try to explain the inheritance of the black, yellow and chocolate colors in Labradors. I will show how to use information from pedigrees and previous breedings to predict pup colors, and make clear why a chocolate x yellow breeding is expected to produce black pups, but black from a yellow x yellow breeding indicates a misbreeding. I have drawn upon the discussion of color genetics in Malcolm Willis's Genetics of the Dog , although the information is also published elsewhere.
