When Joan Hart, an art historian, decided over a decade ago to teach art history at a nursing home in Washington, D.C., she had no idea how profoundly she would be affected by one of the terminally ill residents, Sarah. "It was Sarah who inspired me. I just knew her that one summer, and I had no idea how ill she was," writes Hart in her recent book Beyond the Tunnel: The Arts and Aging in America. "I remember her intense love for art ... an intensity I had never seen before."

You can still expose your children to world-class art because the masterpieces in the Louvre's collection are just a mouse click away with a new DVD-ROM about the Louvre. What's more, the Internet provides many fun ways to explore famous artworks. Let's take a look. 'The Louvre: The Virtual Visit' This visually spectacular DVD-ROM is the result of the work of more than 100 professionals including curators and a film crew that spent several months filming the Louvre collections. The DVD showcases 1,000 pieces of art from the Louvre collections. Visitors have four choices of navigation: This software displays full-screen images of individual pieces of artwork. Visitors have the option of using the "magnifier" to view it even closer. There is a biography of the artist, and the ability to see the piece in scale.

To find out, ask yourself: Do I enjoy creating and talking about art? Do I like to share my skills and interests with others? Do I enjoy working with young people? Am I eager to introduce them to art? Am I comfortable talking to groups? Do I enjoy working with and meeting a variety of people regardless of race, ethnic, or religious background? Am I committed to helping others? Do I believe art enriches life?

When shopping for kids, find books that use art to teach other lessons and tell other tales. Here are some recommendations.
By LENNIE BENNETT, Times Staff Writer Published December 9, 2004 Choosing books about art for children can be intimidating. Over the years, I have spent hundreds of dollars on art appreciation books for my children, who are now young adults. My selection process was hit-and-miss, and I realize now that I approached buying them in the same misguided way I introduced the children to museums: I treated the experience from my own viewpoint instead of trying to understand theirs. I should have been no more surprised by their indifference to Janson's History of Art for Young People than their preference for the armor and armaments galleries over 18th century paintings on their first visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art when they were 7 and 9.

the following questions to i.jacobs@thameshudson.co.uk. Thank you.
    1. I have found two types of art appreciation course (and
correspondingly two types of textbook) in my researches so far:
    (a) A 'simplified survey' course: a sort of stripped down version of
the standard art history survey but speeded up and simplified for
    non-major students.
    (b) A 'three part' course that teaches students (i) basic visual
literacy (line, colour, perspective etc); (ii) fundamental materials and techniques (watercolour; print techniques etc); (iii) a still more simplified/concentrated historical survey. Which type of course do you teach and which book or books are used? What are the reasons for your choice of course and textbook?
