Abstract Benjamin West and the Use of Antiquity Jules David Prown Benjamin West, Agrippina Landing at Brundisium with the Ashes of Germanicus , 1768. Oil on canvas, 163 x 240 cm (64 1/2 x 94 1/2 in.). Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut, Gift of Louis M. Rabinowitz Benjamin West, attending a 1760 touring expedition to Italy, established the earliest direct American artistic exposure to Roman antiquity. This contact occurred before the American Revolution and the pervasive influence of classicism on the forms and ideas of the American Republic. West's theory of art and teaching was based on the study of the human figure as perfected in classical sculpture. Since Greek sculpture was known primarily through Roman copies, West invariably advised artists traveling to Italy to go first to Rome as the center for the study of both antiquities and old masters. In Rome West perceived a linkage between the figures in classical sculpture and American Indians, offering eyewitness testimony to the validity of the Enlightenment concept of the noble savage. Illumination of his experience in Rome is provided by Joseph Wilcocks in his Roman Conversations . Each "conversation" involved visiting a site of historic significance or examining artifacts, reading the writings of classical authors on the relevant events and personages from Roman History, and discussing the significance of this material.
