Lawrence Lessig
... The Shifted Librarian ::Past:: What's going on in that little red head.... libraries, literature, life and the like Thursday, November 13, 2003 The Long Road to Academic Libraries... At this point, it has been so long since I have been blogging that I wonder if I have readers at all anymore. We will go with the assumption I do. So what have I been doing? Trying to find that job that is supposed to make me the rockin librarian I came to library school to be. But alas, there has been no progress on that front. I hope that my resumes make it from bigger piles to smaller ones, or at least not to the recycling bin. But fret not friends...I am confident that the library world will soon discover THE SHECK. I will share with you my contemplations on the job hunt though. I find it morally reprehensible that HR Departments do not take the time to contact applicants to thank them for our applications. Sure, they are busy. And perhaps they get so many applications that they are swimming in resume paper. But what kind of best practice is that? What kind of user-oriented field can we claim to be when our own infrastructre is not oriented to those of us that are involved in it. Is this the old proverb "Do as I say, not as I do"? I have never cared much for that one. I have had it explained to me time and time again that academic libraries take time...these committees have a lot of schedules to juggle. But what does that say about OUR (the applicants) lives?
