A revival in the promotion
of literature to young people
The promotion of literature to young people in Norway has received increased attention in recent years. The disturbing situation revealed by surveys of literacy among Norwegian youngsters has led the politicians to react. National initiatives have been launched in order to strengthen the position of literature among young people and new interdisciplinary networks have been developed. National plans for art and literature
In the course of the last few years two important national projects have been established aimed at protecting and strengthening the place of culture in schools, including literature. These are the National Programme for Arts and Culture in Education (Den kulturelle skolesekken) and ‘Make Room for Reading’. During the coming years these initiatives will be evaluated and the Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority is especially interested in defining the role of libraries. Where and how do public libraries find their place in relation to government initiatives and new partners with which to cooperate? The National Programme for Arts and Culture in Education (Den kulturelle skolesekken)
The aim of the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs in establishing this programme is to offer school pupils valuable, regular contact with art and culture. Public libraries have used the programme as a means of extending arrangements already long available to schools in the form of book-talks, visits by authors, etc. At the same time the programme’s requirements with regard to innovation and greater quality have brought about an alternative and different presentation of literature in schools. County libraries now offer ‘literary productions’, combining literature with other art forms such as music, rapping, dance and drama. (

Art and Literature Collection in New Central Library to be named after Peter DONNELLY
Seattle City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs has announced that the art and literature collection in Seattle's new Central Library will be named The Peter F. Donnelly Art and Literature Collection. Donnelly is president of Corporate Council for the Arts/Arts Fund, a Northwest-based funding agency that benefits arts organizations in western Washington. A formal announcement about the Donnelly collection will be made at the annual luncheon of Corporate Council for the Arts/Arts Fund at noon Wednesday, May 16, at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel. "It was a handful of leadership donors who pooled their resources to make this tribute to Donnelly," Jacobs said. "More than any other individual in our region, Donnelly has furthered a universal appreciation, understanding, love and support for the subjects reflected in the art and literature collection," Jacobs said. Six Seattle-area families contributed to this honoring opportunity: Nancy and Buster Alvord, Jane and David R. Davis, Katharyn Gerlich, The Neukom Family Foundation, Kayla Skinner and Virginia and Bagley Wright.

The first database listed below covers the whole field of language and literature. The others cover the even wider area of the humanities generally. MLA International Bibliography . In electronic form (1963- ). In print (Blue Area Floor 3, 1963-89). This is produced by the Modern Language Association of America and 'indexes critical materials on modern language, literature, linguistics, and folklore... It provides access to over 3,000 journals and series published worldwide, monographs, working papers and proceedings, bibliographies, and more'. Arts and Humanities Citation Index . In electronic form (1983- ). A citation index groups together all newly published items that have cited (i.e. referred to) the same earlier work. This allows you to retrieve new material, rather than tracing older references on a subject. In printed form, the Permuterm Subject Index facilitates subject searching using keywords from document titles only, and the Source Index enables author searching. Access to Arts and Humanities Citation Index requires an ATHENS username and password. Any student or member of staff of the University of Manchester can register for an ATHENS username and password at the Reference and Information Point on Blue Area Floor 1.
