NASFM The membership of the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) comprises the most senior fire officials in the United States. State Fire Marshals' responsibilities vary from state to state, but Marshals tend to be responsible for fire safety code adoption and enforcement, fire and arson investigation, fire incident data reporting and analysis, public education and advising Governors and State Legislatures on fire protection. Some State Fire Marshals are responsible for fire fighter training, hazardous materials incident responses, wildland fires and the regulation of natural gas and other pipelines. Most of our members are appointed by Governors or other high-ranking state officials. Some are state police officers. Many are former fire fighters. Some are fire protection engineers, while others are former state legislators, insurance experts and labor union officials. Click here for a list of NASFM’s principal (i.e., State Fire Marshal) members. NASFM's members are the ultimate authority in our organization. BIOGRAPHY
Welcome to the Department of State's Office of Fire Prevention and Control
We're pleased to announce a fresh look and welcome your comments, suggestions and corrections . With your support, we look forward to continue to grow and provide you with more information. I am pleased to announce the release of a special survey conducted by my office, on behalf of the State Arson Board, detailing specifics relating to the field of fire/arson investigation. The Report of Findings is available for viewing and can be downloaded at: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/fire/pdfs/publications/fireinvsurvey.pdf In February 2004, the OFPC’s Arson Bureau, on behalf of Governor Pataki’s appointed State Arson Board, completed months of work by sending a fire investigation questionnaire to various agencies and municipalities. These questionnaires were tailored to elicit responses from three principle disciplines, including fire, police, and prosecutors, regarding their responsibility for fire investigation and controlling the crime of arson. Over 700 survey questionnaires were sent out and responses were returned almost immediately with an overall return rate of just over 400, equating to 56%. Staff spent another several months compiling these responses and produced a fire investigation survey report of findings. These findings were forwarded to the Arson Board for analysis, approval, and potential future action. The final Report of Findings was approved by the Arson Board at their June 2005 meeting in Nassau County, New York.
