Since I only have a short time and the amount of Christian literature produced is enormous, I can only give you today at best a glimpse of the rich treasures of early Armenian literature in the first few centuries after the creation of the alphabet. I have decided to focus on one representative each of three genres or kinds of writing that are common in Christian literature. But first I would like to make two general points about what I am talking about. Now a command came to me, one Agathangelos from the great city of Rome, trained in the arts of the ancients, proficient in Latin and Greek and not unskilled in literary composition. Thus we came to the Arsacid court in the reign of the brave, virtuous, mighty and heroic Trdat, who has surpassed all his ancestors in valor and who has done deeds in battle worthy of champions and giants. Trdat IV the Great (or Tiridates, which is the Greek form of the name) was the Arsacid king of Armenia from 299 to 330, the first Christian king. Now there are all sorts of problems if we accept what Agathangelos says of himself. The most obvious is that Agathangelos could not have been writing in Armenian if he lived and wrote during the reign of Trdat. But also Agathangelos makes references to books that were written much later. This has led a number of scholars to argue that Agathangelos is really a later 5th century author who presented himself as a contemporary of Trdat and Gregory.

http://www.armeniaemb.org/DiscoverArmenia/ArmenianChurch/Index.htm
Start Page v Diplomatic Mission v Armenia US v Discover Armenia v v News v Kids v Consular Affairs v Contact Us The Armenian Church is an independent Christian church, also known as the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. Its head is the Catholicos , who resides at Holy Etchmiadzin, near Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.
Christianity was declared the state religion of Armenia in AD 301. Armenia thus became the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion. This was largely due to the efforts of St. Gregory the Illuminator. Born a nobleman, he converted Armenia's king Tiridates III, who had formerly perse-cuted the Christians. Conversion of the rest of the population soon followed. It was St. Gregory who built the Mother Church at Etchmiadzin in AD 303.
Until the 5th century, Christian worship in Armenia was conducted in Greek or Syriac, since there was no Armenian alphabet, hence no written language. In AD 404, St. Mesrob (at that time a monk) completed an alphabet of 36 letters. His objective was to translate the Bible into Armenian, and the golden age of classical Armenian literature began shortly thereafter.
Persia reduced Armenia to vassaldom and in AD 450 issued a decree ordering all Christians to embrace the Zoroastrian religion. The Armenians, under Prince Vartan Mamigonian, rose in revolt. This culminated in the Battle of Avarayr. Vartan lost the battle, but under the leadership of his nephew, Vahan, the Armenians continued the war for 30 years. They won a decisive victory through a peace accord in AD 484, and Armenian Christianity survived. St. Vartan Day-which is celebrated in February of each year-commemorates the battle and is a major Armenian holiday.

http://www.umd.umich.edu/dept/armenian/students.html
The Armenian Research Center/University of Michigan-Dearborn How Can the Armenian Research Center Help You?
The University of Michigan-Dearborn is unusual to have on its campus a center devoted to the study of the Armenians. Unusual in that such specialized research centers are normally found on larger campuses such as Ann Arbor, and also unusual in that the Armenian Research Center is the only such research institute devoted to the study of the Armenians at any U.S. university.
This gives you the extraordinary opportunity to do special class research you would not otherwise have easy access to. These research opportunities include Russian history, Armenian history, Armenian literature, Armenian art and architecture, Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia, Turkey, the Kurds and more. Besides opportunities for class research, the Armenian Research Center is able to offer internships and directed study for qualified students.
Now you may be wondering: Who are the Armenians, and why should I want to do research on them? That depends. Are you interested in modern history/sociology? Armenia has reemerged after 70 years of Soviet rule as an independent state in the volatile Caucasus, just above the Middle East, below Georgia and Russia, and right next to Azerbaijan. A lively neighborhood is putting it mildly. Are you interested in ancient history/sociology? The Armenians have been around for over 2,500 years, and their ancient state of Armenia was the first state to proclaim itself Christian. Maybe you are interested in something in the middle: say the Middle Ages. Armenia shifted itself during the Crusades to the Mediterranean Sea and had contacts with the Crusaders.

Native speakers of lesser-used languages are condemned to learn at least two languages. Nowadays, the Internet opens wide opportunities for such people, like Armenians, to develop and to maintain their language and culture. The role of Internet became bigger, when we take into consideration the existence of great Diaspora communities. In this case World Wide Web makes possible the implementation of different educational projects, which will be available and helpful for new generations and will promote the vitality of the language.
Within the framework of the above-mentioned, we would like to present the role of Digital Library project for the maintenance of Armenian language and culture.
The two most important historical developments that have technologically impacted the technological growth of Armenian culture and literature are the creation of the Armenian alphabet by Mesrob Mashtots in the year 405 AD, and the use of printing in Armenia, for the first time, by Hagob Meghapart and

Translator's Preface
Mkhitar Gosh was a major intellectual figure in Armenian life of the late 12th and early 13th centuries. At the time of his death in 1213, he had authored more than a dozen works, including the codification of Armenian law (the Armenian Law Book ), the Fables , a number of prayers, sermons and theological works, and a short chronicle; he twice had received the title of doctor of the Church ( vardapet ); had served as confidant and advisor to many of the most important Armenian princes of the day; and as a teacher had inspired a generation of students, many of whom became prominent theologians and historians of 13th century Armenia. Biographical information about Gosh is found in the History of the Armenians written by Kirakos of Gandzak (d. 1270/71), and in the colophon or postscript of Mkhitar's own Law Book . Beyond the historical facts, it is possible to learn even more about this man, especially about his worldview, from the morals advanced in the Fables According to Kirakos of Gandzak, Mkhitar was born in the city of Gandzak (modern Kirovabad) in Azerbaijan. No birth date is provided by Kirakos, but judging from the fact that he was said to have died in deep old age in 1213, scholars have placed Mkhitar's birth between 1130 and 1140. He received his early education in his hometown, which was a center of Armenian population, though under Muslim control. In his early teens, Mkhitar was ordained a celibate priest and began his scholarly studies with the learned
