No Written Literature before Mesrop
No Armenian literature in writing existed before Mesrop's era. Movses of Khoren (Khorenatsi) cites certain names as of historians dealing with Armenia; Mar-Apas Katina (identified by some critics with Berosus), Olympus (Ughicub) of Ani, the archpriest of Hormuzd (Aramazd), Bardesan and Khorohput, Iranian annalists. Khorenatsi's statement as to the existence of such historians as these has been disputed by some authors, but their opinion is debatable, because Armenia, in the stage of civilization which she had then attained, could not have remained without possessing any inscribed annals at all. The upper class of her population was highly cultivated; life within the royal court and satrapal mansion was colorful and rich in the display of artistic taste. There were men of letters among the nobility; Tigran the Great's son Artavazd had written tragedies and treatises in the Greek language which Plutarch mentions with praise;

models, while the study of the French language and literature became predominant in the Armenian high schools of Turkey.
17th Century Renaissance
With the seventeenth century, there burst forth a renaissance of Armenian literature, when writers in Russia, and later on, in Turkey, ventured to use the vernacular ( ashkharabar ), rather than the classical language. Abbot Mekhitar, himself the founder of the St. Lazar Congregation, had compiled a grammar of the modern Armenian speech. Books, pamphlets and periodical publications helped towards this transformation by popularizing the National and foreign works, which were until then within the reach of only a few men of erudition. The effect of this movement on the welding of the thought and sentiment of the masses and in creating a public opinion, was most remarkable.
Mekhitar was born in Sivas, his baptismal name being Manoug. His early training was entrusted to Armenian nuns, and he was ordained a deacon at the age of fourteen. Spurred by a keen desire for learning, he journeyed to Etchmiadzin, but was disappointed in his expectations there. Three months later, he went to the cloister of Lake Sevan, where he found solace in a vision of St. Mary. On his way back to Sivas, he stopped at Erzerum, and at the request of the Superior of the Monastery of Passen, remained there a year, instructing the students. At the end of that time, deciding that the environment was unfavorable, he returned home. But the exertions of travel were too much for his frail constitution, and he fell ill. For a year, his eyesight was threatened. When he recovered his

Armenian Literature Before the introduction of Christianity into Armenia in the 3rd century AD, Armenian literature was Assyrian or Medo-Persian in character. After that date, however, the language, literature, and finally the alphabet of Greece appeared in Armenian writing, although eastern Armenia retained the Syriac alphabet. The translation of the Bible into Classical Armenian, traditionally ascribed to the monk and scholar St. Mesrob, and his systematization of the Armenian alphabet in 410 opened a period of literary activity in the 5th century known as the Golden Age of Armenian literature. The principal Armenian writers of this age were translators. http://www.ctstateu.edu/univrel/ctreview/fall97/ddhawp.html
Diana Der-Hovanessian Armenian Women Poets Armenian women poets are writing in a long and honored tradition. Poetry is considered the highest art form in Armenia and poets, male or female, are treated like rock stars there. Poets are also expected to be political. Armenian literature, like the literature in any oppressed society, was expected to carry secret messages of hope and pride to its people.
Poetry started as a religious art: chants to the sun, songs of praise to the mother goddess. Armenia was a matriarchy in its pre-Christian days.
The language is an Indo-European tongue similar to Greek. The people call themselves Hai, after Haig a great, great, grandson of Noah. Or perhaps the Hai is a tribute to their Hittite roots. Modern Armenians are an ancient people, a mixture of Urartuans and Hittites who were always in Anatolia and Armens who came from Thrace. Writing by their ancestors on clay tablets is being unearthed even today in Armenia and present-day Turkey.
But harder to find is material written on perishable paper or papyrus. Much is lost, destroyed not only by the Turks and other invaders, but by the Armenians themselves when they changed from a pagan to the first Christian nation.
The earliest examples of poems signed by Armenian women are from the eighth century. But ancient Armenia had been a matriarchy with predominantly female deities . . . Anahid, Nane, Astghik. While it is likely in the centuries before Christ that poems, songs of praise and prayers were written by women, the abolishment of pagan rites and the destruction of pagan temples removed evidence. What remains is an oral tradition that gives us an idea of the position of women. The folk epic, David of Sassoun, is the second oldest epic in world literature, second after the Babylonian Gilgamesh. (Dating derives from time of discovery and publication.) In the Armenian epic, David of Sassoun, the women are as strong and as wily as the men.

Professor Thomson deals here with the origins of Armenian Christian literature and its development as an individual literary culture. At the same time, these studies make available to students of Patristics and Byzantine history some of the wealth of information preserved in the Armenian sources. One set of articles, focusing on the question of origins, looks at the influence and use made of Christian Syriac and Greek writings, both theological and historical, as well as those of late classical antiquity. Others examine how the Armenians viewed themselves in their ambiguous position between Byzantium and Iran, and how those views were expressed in their historical writing. A key theme, as the author would see it, is the formulation of a 'received tradition', and the ways in which later writers interacted with it and used it, removed from its original context, to create their own images of Armenian individuality.
