Armenian Literature
The Armenian nation had a long history already by the time of Christ, often as an independent or buffer state between the Roman and Parthian (later Sassanid Persian) empires. The first mentions of Christianity in Armenia date from the 3rd century AD. Eusebius of Caesarea (Church History VI.46.3) records Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria, sent a treatise in the form of a letter, On Repentance , "to those in Armenia whose bishop was Meruzanes." He also records that in 311 the persecuting emperor Maximin Daia ended up at war with the Armenians who, although long-term Roman allies, had become fervently Christian and resisted his attempts to force them to sacrifice to idols. Christianity seems to have come from Syriac and Persian sources initially. Fifth century tradition records that the apostle Thaddeus baptised the Royal family of Edessa, the home of Syriac, and then came to Armenia and baptised the princess Sandukht. Faustus of Byzantium calls the Armenian Catholicosate "the throne of Thaddeus." The oldest theological terms in Armenian come from Syriac, and the Diatessaron circulated in Armenia in the fifth century as it did in Syria. But after the fourth century, Armenian churches emphasised their links with the Greek-speaking world and Constantinople, and later historians tend to obscure the Syriac connection. Christianity proper begins in Armenia with Gregory the Illuminator (ca. 240-332). He baptised King Tiridates and the Royal family in 314 AD. Gregory was quickly consecrated a bishop in Caesarea in Cappadocia, and became the first Catholicos of the Armenian church. He founded a see at Ashtishat in Taron, and his son Aristakes was present at the Council of Nicaea. From these roots the church spread among the nation as a whole.

invented the armenian alphabet to translate the bible into Armenian. He also developed a caucasus-albanian and a georgian alphabet. His poems are lyrical and faithful.
Sayat Nova is the armenian gussan, the poet of love, the last troubadour. His poems are sung and recited by Armenians all over the world.
Nahapet Koutchak is the poet of hairen, poems which consist of four verses by 15 syllabs each. His poetry is pure renaissance: live the life intensively and enjoy the beauty of the world. So he writes about love, love which gets its rules only from the heart.
Eghishe Charents is the armenian poet of the 20th century. His work mirrors the history and misery of Armenia of the first half of the twentieth century: from the times of sultan Abdul Hamid II to the 1915 genocid to Bolshevism and Stalinism. His life was full of greatness and tragic, very armenian.

The Heritage of Armenian Literature Volume 3: From the Eighteenth Century to Modern Times
Edited by Agop J. Hacikyan, Edward S. Franchuk, Nourhan Ouzounian, and Gabriel Basmajian
The volume begins with a comprehensive overview of the entire historical, social, and literary panorama of the periods covered: the Armenian Renaissance, the development of modern Armenian (with its Western and Eastern versions), the emergence of a national identity and democratic thinking (with their impact on literature and theater), and such literary schools as Romanticism, Realism, and Aestheticism. Biographies of more than 130 prominent authors appear in these pages, together with critical comments concerning their works and extensive excerpts from the works themselves. The texts are edited, annotated with footnotes, and presented in a format that permits easy comprehension. Serving as both a reference and a textbook, The Heritage of Armenian Literature unveils a rich pageant of works in historical perspective. The varied experiences from the Armenian past come alive, allowing for new understandings and comparisons to literatures of other nations. New articles: Armenian Literature from http://www.stvartanbookstore.com Armenian Literature , and Armenian Badarak information: In any case, like all folk dance, armenian folk dance is part of a living tradition which has changed a great deal and will continue to change, absorbing new influences and itself influencing others. It was the first of the arts of armenia to be seriously studied, and to this day armenian architecture receives more scholarly attention than all of the other arts combined. The written language of that time, called classical armenian or grabar, remained the armenian literary language, with various changes, until the 19th century. Similarly, no simple list of the distinguishing characteristics of armenian art can be made, since it shares much with the art of its neighbors near and far. At the end of the 10th century the byzantine empire, although ruled by an imperial dynasty of armenian origin, adopted a near-sighted policy of weakening armenia and eventually annexed it in 1045, thus depriving itself of an effective shield against disastrous invasion of turkic nomads from central asia.
About Armenian Literature
The anatolian plain is one of the world's oldest centers of civilization. With the religious patriarch sahag, the scholar mesrob mahtots developed a new alphabet containing 36 letters, which was used to write the armenian language. However, the armenian church still uses grabar, or classical in church services. We call ourselves hye or hay, because the hayassa tribe were more advanced by culture and were the oldest tribe in that area, from the14th century.

Armenian Literature : Articles
A landlocked country in modern times, armenia was the smallest soviet republic from 1920 until the dissolution of the soviet union in 1991. Communities were often given quotas and would have to buy additional weapons from turks to meet their quota. Another major city in the valley of ararat was argishti-khinili, also founded by argishti i in the year 775 bc. Different versions of harsaneek, also originally a `mom' or candle dance, come from various parts of the east, as do many exquisite forms of the women's solo improvisational style known as `naz bar', or `grace dance', on which are based the choreographed movements of dances such as archka yerezanke.

World Conference in Contemporary
Armenian Literature
UCLA
April 7-8, 2001
The Narekatsi Chair of Armenian Studies at UCLA organized a conference devoted to contemporary Armenian literature held on campus at the Rolfe Hall auditorium on the weekend of April 7-8. The two-day conference examined different aspects of the literature composed over the last ten to fifteen years in the course of six panels.
The first of these, commenced on Saturday morning at 9:30, dealt with the broad topic of defining the period and highlighting the major trends, which have characterized it. Tumultuous events have shaped it such as the rise of the Karabagh Movement and the subsequent war to protect the region’s independence, the earthquake in the north of Armenia, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of Armenia as a sovereign republic, the hardships caused by the Azerbaijani and Turkish blockades, the struggles of the transition to a market economy, the impact of all these developments on the communities of the Diaspora, and the introduction of a new era in Armenia-Diaspora co-operation and interchange. This last decade of unprecedented pride, joy, challenge, and striving to respond to a new set of circumstances has inevitably evoked a range of reactions from Armenian writers, especially after the lifting of Soviet censorship in the republic.
After the opening by Prof. S. Peter Cowe of UCLA, these general trends were explored in detail by Prof. Azat Eghiazaryan, director of the Institute of Literature affiliated with the Armenian Academy of Sciences. He was then followed by Dr. Seyran Grigoryan, Dr. Grigor Hakobyan, and Dr. Aleksandr Topchyan, who reviewed in turn the current state of the three main literary genres of poetry, prose writing (novel and short story), and drama. Setting the pattern for the other panels, these initial presentations were succeeded first by a series of select readings from contemporary literary works illustrating the topic of the panel and then by a round table discussion featuring a number of notable writers and critics. In all about fifteen representatives came from the Armenian Republic and around the same number from various centers in the Diaspora - Middle East, Europe and North America.
