Armenia
Overview
The ancient country of Armenia lies on the southern slope of the Armenian Mountains in the Lesser Caucasus, bordered by Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is one of the oldest cities in the world, founded nearly 2800 years ago during the time of ancient Babylon. Most of the old town was demolished in the 1930s, ostensibly to upgrade standards of public health. Rebuilt, its architecture is solid, sometimes imposing and essentially Soviet in character. Lake Sevan, 70km (43 miles) east of Yerevan, is the largest lake in the Caucasus, much praised for its pure waters, stunning setting and delicious salmon trout. Armenian cooking is based on lamb, either grilled and served as shashlik with flat bread, or prepared as soup ( bozbash ) or stew. Armenian brandies are excellent. Locals are proud to inform visitors that Winston Churchill always insisted on Armenian in preference to French brandy. Restaurants and nightclubs are increasing in number, especially in Yerevan. Opera, theatre and ballet performances are cheap and of a high standard.

WELLESLEY COLLEGE PROFESSOR SPEAKS ON
ARMENIANS OF WATERTOWN AT NAASR ASSEMBLY

Prof. Joan Bamberger of Wellesley College spoke at the luncheon program preceding the 46th Annual Assembly of the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research on "The Watertown Armenian Community from 1900-2000: Its Origins, Growth, and Strength" on Saturday afternoon, November 18, at the NAASR Center and Headquarters, 395 Concord Ave., Belmont, Mass.
Dr. Bamberger, since 1977 an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Wellesley and currently a visiting scholar with the Armenian International Women's Association, is working on a book-length sociological study and history of the Armenian community of Watertown. She has also taught at Brandeis University, Yale University, and Tufts University, and has written and lectured widely on Armenian and Women's Studies-related subjects. In addition, she has done extensive research and writing on Brazilian society. She received her education at Smith College, Radcliffe College, and Harvard University, where she received a PhD degree in anthropology. She was born in New York City and is now a resident of Watertown. An Outsider's Perspective Bamberger opened her talk by explaining that when she moved to Watertown in 1976 she was unaware that she had moved into a center of an Armenian-American community, and she had little or no knowledge of Armenia and the Armenians. Intrigued by what she saw of the community and the culture, she sought out an Armenian language class; initially failing to find one, she enrolled in an Armenian cooking class instead. This class served as her entrée into the Armenian community.

    Background.
The existence of man in Armenia dates back to 6000 years BC. As a country it adopted Christianity in 301 AD making it the world’s oldest Christian country. Once a mighty empire it extended from the Caspian to the Black Sea, and included what is now Turkey and Iran. Many of the Great Silk Road routes crisscrossed the country. Tragedy and devastation has haunted Armenia and its people for centuries – yet it has survived. It is a land of vast and magnificent mountains, plains and high plateaus, beautiful ancient churches and monasteries and its people are all-encompassing in their hospitality and generosity.
