Background on the Armenian People

Present day Armenians are a mixture of two ancient people: indigenous people, who melded with the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Urartu between the tenth and seventh centuries BC, and the Indo-Europeans who entered the region at the end of the eighth century BC. Between ninety-five and fifty-five BC the short-lived Armenian Empire of Tigran the Great stretched from the Mediterranean to the Caspian Seas. In 301AD, Armenia became the first nation to officially embrace Christianity. In 387AD, the Romans and Persians divided Armenia for the first time. In 405AD, the Armenian alphabet of thirty-six letters (later thirty-eight) was invented to enable the new converts to reproduce the Bible in their own language.
The Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia was established at the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the southern edge of Asia Minor during the time of the Crusades. This Kingdom flourished from 1080 to 1375 AD, but was overrun by Mamluk Arabs, and later by Mongols from Central Asia.
An independent Armenian Republic was established in a section of Russian Armenia in 1918, lasting only two years. By 1920 it had become a part of the Soviet Union and remained such until independence was declared in 1991. Today, Armenia, borders Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east and Iran to the south. It is a small, landlocked democracy of 2 million, determined in its effort to rise from centuries of occupation and subjugation. Approximately 7 million Armenians are scattered throughout the world, 1 million of which reside in the United States.

I. ANCIENT POLITICAL CONSTITUTION
The name Armenia appears for the first time in the cuneiform inscriptions of Darius Hystaspis. Much obscurity obtains as to the derivation of the word. Some would refer it back to the Vannic word Armani-lis , a stela, while others would connect it with Arman, a district lying to the south of Lake Van. Armenia is the name given to a mountainous strip of land situated in the southwestern portion of Asia. One one side it touches the Black Sea, on the other the Caspian, while on the north and on the south it is enclosed respectively by the Caucasus and the Taurus Mountains. Within its confines is the celebrated Lake Van. In shape it much resembles a quadrangle. As far as is known, the earliest inhabitants of Armenia were a white race, whose capital, Dhuspa, stood on the site of the present city of Van. An Aryan race replaced it and it is from this latter stock that the modern Armenians have sprung. They style their ancestors the and make allusion to their country as

Clinton said in the statement read by White House spokesman Joe Lockhart at a press briefing. The president said in the statement that the United States has built strong ties with Armenia and that "at this time of tragedy, we renew our support for the Armenian people and their leaders as they continue to build on the principles that today's victims have so courageously embodied." Satala
A titular see in Armenia Prima, suffragan of Sabastia. Satala according to the ancient geographers was situated in a valley surrounded by mountains, a little north of the Euphrates, where the road from Trapezus to Samosata crossed the boundary of the Roman Empire. Later it was connected with Nicopolis by two highways. This site must have been occupied as early as the annexation of Lesser Armenian under Vespasian. Trajan visited it in 115 and received the homage of the princes of the Caucasus and the Euxine. It was he doubtless who established there the Legio XV Apollinaris and began the construction of the great castra stativa (permanent camp) which it was to occupy till the fifth century. The town must have sprung up around this camp; in the time of Ptolemy it was already important. In 530 the Persians were defeated under its walls. Justinian constructed more powerful fortifications there, but these did not prevent Satala from being captured in 607-8 by the Persians. It is now Sadagh, a village of 500 inhabitants, in the vilayet of Erzeroum. The remains of the camp still exist strewn with fragments of brick bearing the stamp of the legion; there are also the ruins of an aqueduct and of Justinian's citadel; some Latin and Greek inscriptions, the latter Christian , have been discovered.
