THE FIRST SELJOUKID INVASION IN ARMENIA, THE REGION OF VASBOURAGAN:
NEAR VAN LAKE (1047 A.D.)
(All the facts narrated in our issue of Armenian ancient history, are related by the contemporary historians of those facts. Exposing some details of the events, we avoided any personal comment and often we tried to modify as much as possible the outrageous vocabulary in use near the defeated people qualifying their oppressors (or vice versa) tousand years ago, politically, socially and even in matter of religion). After the domination of all India and Persia, in 1047 A.D., the Seljoukids made their entrance by little hordes on the Armenian lands at the south of Van Lake, in Vasbouragan region, and subdued immense lands and territories under their authority. They continued the domination taking the direction of nearby city of Passen, in the valley of Arazani. It was uneasy for the Greek soldiers in the neighborhood to stop all these invaders who immediately tried to reach Trebizonde, a city on the shores of the Black Sea, north of Asia Minor. But they were defeated by the intense resistance of the inhabitants all around, and were obliged to withdraw and go to Tavrej, their stronghold in Persia.

History of the Armenians
Translator's Preface
The History of the Armenians , attributed to P'awstos Buzand, describes episodically and in epic style, events from the military, socio-cultural, and political life of fourth century Armenia. This work is perhaps the most problematical of the Armenian sources, and one of the most tantalizing. The classical Armenian employed is rich and earthy; the style, clear and direct, perhaps reflecting the author's awareness that his work would be read aloud. Controversy surrounds almost every aspect of this History : the format of the extant (versus the original) text; the author's identity; and where, in what language, and when it was written. There is an extensive body of scholarly literature devoted to these and other questions. Below, briefly, we shall outline some of the major hypotheses.
The present text of P'awstos exists in four "Books" or dprut'iwnk' . Instead of being numbered Books I, II, II, and IV as one would expect, the first book of the extant text is titled Book III ("Beginning") and is followed by Books IV, V, and VI. The word "Ending" appears in the chapter heading of Book VI. The late fifth century historian Ghazar P'arpec'i cites a passage from the text of P'awstos which he claims was found in Book II.15; however, in our text this same passage is in Book IV.15. In other words, Ghazar's "P'awstos Book I" is now our Book III ("Beginning"). The Armenist S. Malxasyanc' speculated that this curious fact could be explained as follows: toward the end of the fifth century, after Ghazar P'arpec'i used it, the text of P'awstos Buzand was placed by an editor as the third history in a book of many histories. This would explain why the

History of the Armenians
Translator's Preface
Kirakos Gandzaketsi's History of the Armenians is a primary source for the study of the Armenian highlands in the 13th century. This lengthy work, which has survived in 65 chapters, is divided thematically into several sections. Part one is a summary of Armenian church and political history from the 4th through the 12th centuries. This section, which describes the lives and times of the heads of the Armenian Church ( kat'oghikoi ), is based on earlier Armenian sources, many of which have survived. The second section describes political and military events in the 12th century both in Eastern (or Caucasian) Armenia and in the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia on the Mediterranean. The next section (chapter 10), resembling the first, contains a biographical list of the kat'oghikoi of Caucasian Aghbania (modern Azarbaijan). In chapter 11 and subsequent chapters, Kirakos described the events of his own day: the period of the Zak'arids, the Mongol invasions and domination, and their impact on the Armenians and other peoples of the Middle East. As the author himself was aware, this was by far the most important part of his History , and he devoted much of the work to it.

Summary of Events Leading up to the Genocide
Somewhat surprisingly to many, Armenians and Turks lived in relative harmony in the Ottoman empire for centuries. Armenians were known as the "loyal millet". During these times, although Armenians were not equal and had to put up with certain special hardships, they were pretty well accepted and there was relatively little violent conflict. Things began to change for a number of reasons. Nationalism, a new force in the world reared its head and made ethnic groupings self-conscious, and the Ottoman Empire began to crumble. It became known as "the sick man of Europe" and the only thing holding it together really was the European powers lack of agreement on how to split it up. As other Christian minorities gained their independence one by one, the Armenians became more isolated as the only major Christian minority. Armenians and Turks began to have conflicting dreams of the future. Some Armenians began to call for independence like the Greeks and others had already received, while some Turks began to envision a new Pan-Turkic empire spreading all the way to Turkic speaking parts of Central Asia. Armenians were the only ethnic group in between these two major pockets of Turkish speakers and the nationalist Turks wanted to get rid of them altogether.

HAUNTED MEMORIES Pioneering scholar in Armenian history History Professor Richard Hovannisian marked his 40th year as a teacher. BY MEG SULLIVAN
UCLA Today Although Richard Hovannisian-s father never spoke of the Armenian genocide, his family knew the Tulare County grape farmer was deeply traumatized by the atrocities that had claimed his father, brother and pregnant mother. "He didn't talk about it, but in his sleep he would call for his mother," Hovannisian, the holder of an endowed chair in history, recalled recently. "That's the way with the aftermath of genocides it's not there, but (is) there at all times." Hovannisian has dedicated his life to documenting the history of the 1.5 million people more than half the Armenian population living in the Ottoman Empire killed between 1915 and 1918. The historical event continues to elicit controversy and is still being disputed today by Turkey. UCLA recently marked the 40th anniversary of the historian-s career, which began with a UCLA Extension course he taught in 1960. Two years later, he joined UCLA's then-2-year-old Armenian Studies Program, one of the first in the nation. Together, the man and the program rose to prominence.
