History of Armenia My thanks to Sako for contributing this material,
as well as the genocide and treaty maps. The present-day Republic of Armenia occupies but a fraction of the ancient Armenia, which extended from the lesser Caucasus Mountains south across the Armenian plateau to the Taurus Mountains. Frequent earthquakes still remind us that the land lies near the great geological fault between the Asian and African subcontinent plates. The Armenian plateau is a highland which rises directly above its surrounding regions. Geography undoubtedly played a key role in the history and culture of Armenia. Forming an important highway of great value for trade and commerce between Asia and Europe, Armenia it seems was destined to be at grips with adversity. The land with its untold riches and its strategic position of primary import stirred the ambitions of many "superpowers" of the region. For a succession of centuries, the Armenians were in constant warfare with invaders and conquerors - Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Parthians, Arabs and Turks - who rolled over their homeland, although certainly not without meeting the most stubborn resistance. Throughout these turbulent centuries, the Armenians successfully asserted their historical identity and upheld their national heritage against great odds. Although on occasions overpowered by superior forces and reduced to the status of vassals, they nevertheless enjoyed a semblance of national autonomy.

Armenia - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Armenia is a country with a troubled history. For hundreds of years, the people of Armenia were without a home. That's because for much of its history, Armenia existed only as a part of nearby countries or empires. It's been only recently (in the last 10 years or so) that Armenia has existed as a truly unified and independent country.
The history of the Armenian people stretches back about 8,000 years. The first people to settle in the area of Armenia in eastern-central Asia arrived around 6,000 BC. The first government in the area was the kingdom of Urartu, which governed the area around Lake Van in the 13th century BC. The Urartu kingdom fell a few hundred years later, and came under rule of the Persians. In 30 BC, the Roman Empire conquered Armenia, and less than 100 years later, the Parthians took Armenia from Rome.
During the early 4th century, Armenia accepted Christianity as its official religion. This gave Armenia more in common with the countries of Europe than its closer neighbors, many of whom were and are Muslim nations. In fact, this newly Christian nation found itself under Arab Muslim rule in the 7th century. The Arabs set up the Bagratid family as governors of Armenia.

Armenia Table of Contents Historical Background The Armenians are an ancient people who speak an Indo-European language and have traditionally inhabited the border regions common to modern Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. They call themselves hai (from the name of Hayk, a legendary hero) and their country Haiastan. Their neighbors to the north, the Georgians, call them somekhi , but most of the rest of the world follows the usage of the ancient Greeks and refers to them as Armenians, a term derived according to legend from the Armen tribe. Thus the Russian word is armianin , and the Turkish is ermeni Armenia Table of Contents Source: U.S. Library of Congress

http://www.ahmp.org/wpcglast.html
THE WASHINGTON POST Sunday, March 11, 2001; Page B01 Armenia's History, Turkey's Dilemma By Paul Glastris It is dimly lit and dank as a cavern inside the old National Bank building two blocks from the White House. The electricity is off, and we make our way around with the aid of a flashlight. Its narrow beam reveals an impressive three-story atrium with a carved wood ceiling, dated-looking ATM machines and an old bank vault, its yard-thick steel door yawning open. I'm exploring this vintage space with Ross Vartian of the Armenian National Institute (ANI), a branch of the increasingly powerful Armenian Assembly of America, an ethnic lobbying group. The ANI bought the building last year for $7.25 million, with the aim of transforming it from a place that safeguarded money to one that will preserve a memory. Four years from now, Vartian tells me, this space will be a $50 million museum and memorial filled with mural-size photos, personal artifacts and interactive exhibits chronicling the history of an atrocity that time and politics have long obscured: the Armenian genocide of 1915 to 1923. Visitors will learn how, in those eight years, 1.5 million Armenians living in the eastern Anatolia region of present-day Turkey were massacred or perished in forced death marches ordered by the nationalist Turkish regime of the declining Ottoman Empire. Vartian says he wants the museum to be as emotionally powerful and historically accurate as Washington's hugely popular U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. That means being honest about not only the Turks who slaughtered Armenians, but also those who tried to save them. "Just about every Armenian who survived, including a member of my own family, was saved by a righteous Turk," says Vartian. But whether it honors righteous Turks or not, the museum will not be seen as historically accurate by the Republic of Turkey.

Description
About the Author Related Books "This is an impressive work. There is nothing so thorough or comprehensive in English, or indeed in any language, so far as I know, for any of Armenia's neighbors in these years. . . . The total four or five volumes will be standard for many years to come."Roderic H. Davidson, American Historical Review "Erudite and remarkably objective, given the tensions that beset studies of recent Armenian history, this book will be the definitive political history of the period in question for some decades to come."Khachig Tololyan, Canadian Journal of History DESCRIPTION (back to top) With these two volumes, Richard Hovannisian completes his definitive history of the first independent Armenian state in modern times and provides the basis for comparison with the new Armenian republic established in 1991 after seven decades of Soviet rule. Based on Armenian, Russian, Turkish, German, Italian, French, and English-language archival materials, these volumes provide the first comprehensive, multidimensional analysis of this critical turning point in Armenian historya period clouded in misinformation and controversy.

The Unknown Chapter in the History of Ancient India and Armenia
It may be generally known that Armenians whose love of commerce has been proverbial, have, from time immemorial, traded with India, whither they were allured from their distant homes in the snow-clad mountains of Armenia, by the glamour of the lucrative trade in spices, muslins, and precious stones, which they carried on successfully with Europe by the overland route, through Afghanistan, Persia, and Armenia, via Trebizond (W.Armenia, current Turkey),long before the advent of any European traders, adventurest and interlopers into the country. And it may safely mentioned that even before the Mohammedan invasion of India in the 10th century, the Armenians were found at all principal commercial centres and capitals of India engaged in peaceful pursuit of commmerce. It would be interesting, however, from a historical point of view, to trace in what period of the world's history Armenians first set foot on Indian soil.

Armenians are one of the oldest nations of the world. They are contemporaries of ancient Shoumers, Accadians and Egyptians. There are many hypothesis about the formation of the Armenian people, now there is one predominatint theory in the scientific circles: the Hamkrelidze- Ivanov's theory, according to which Armenians are an Indo-European people and are aborigines of Armenian highlands. The name of the country, Armenia and people Armens first were mentioned in the cuneiform of Persian king Darii I. The cuneiform was written in three languages-ancient Persian, Accadian and Elammian. In the Persian and Elammian copies the country is mentioned as Urartu, but in Accadian version it is mentioned as Armenia.
a r m e n i a Homer speaks about Armens in his "Iliad". Armenians call themselves "hi" and the country Hayastan. This names are based on the legend about the courageous Haik warrior who defeated the Persian warrior
