Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world with a recorded history of about 3500 years. The oldest known ancestors of modern Armenians, the Hayasa-Azzi tribes, also known as Proto-Armenians, were indigenous to the Armenian Highland in Eastern Anatolia. These tribes formed the Nairi tribal union, which existed until late 13th century BC. The legendary forefather of Armenians, Hayk, famous for his battles with Babylonian ruler Bel, most likely was one of the Hayasa tribal leaders. The words 'Nairi' and 'Nairian' are still used by Armenians as poetic synonyms of the words 'Armenia' and 'Armenian'.
At the end of the second millennium BC, another Indo-European ethnic group, closely related to Thracians and Phrygians and referred to by the Greeks as Armens, migrated to the Armenian Highland from Northern Balkans. According to a Greek myth, which actually reflects this tribal migration, the forefather of Armenians - Armenios - was one of the Argonauts, accompanying Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece. In the year 1115 BC, king Tiglath Pileser I of Assyria reports a battle with a force of 20.000 Armens in the Gadmokh province of Assyria.

These views are not necessarily contradictory, since present-day Armenians are undoubtedly an amalgam of several peoples, autochthonous (Hayasa-Azzi, Nairi, Hurrians, etc.) and immigrant, who emerged as one linguistic family around 600 BC. Armenian tradition has preserved several legends concerning the origin of the Armenian nation. The most important of these tells of Hayk (Hayg or Haig), the eponymous hero of the Armenians who called them-selves Hay (Hye) and their country Hayk' or Hayastan The historian of the 5th century, Movses Khorenatsi , also relates at some length the valiant deeds of Aram whose fame extended far beyond the limits of his country. Armenia and Armenians Armenia is one of the fifteen constituent republics of the USSR. The present-day Armenian SSR, located in Transcaucasia, represents only the eastern fringe of the traditional Armenian homeland which extends east from the Euphrates across the mountainous Armenian plateau in eastern Anatolia presided over by Mt. Ararat of Biblical fame. Historic Armenia has also been described as the land of the three major lakesVan (presently in Turkey), Sevan (in present-day Armenia), and Urmia (presently in Iran). Armenia has one of the oldest indigenous cultures of any of the peoples of the USSR. Armenia is also credited as being the first state to establish Christianity as its official religion. Contemporary scholarship suggests that the Armenians are descendants of various indigenous people who meld (10th through 7th century BC) with the Urarteans (Ararateans); while classical historians and geographers cite the tradition that the Armenians migrated into their homeland from Thrace and Phrygia (Herodotus, Strabo), or even Thessaly (Strabo). These views are not necessarily contradictory, since present-day Armenians are undoubtedly an amalgam of several peoples, autochthonous (Hayasa-Azzi, Nairi, Hurrians, etc.) and immigrant, who emerged as one linguistic family around 600 BC. The Armenian language, like Greek and Iranian, is a part of the Indo-European family of languages that is spoken from north India, through Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, and Greece into Europe and European Russia. The Armenian alphabet, devised early in the fifth century by St. Mesrob (Mashtotz)who also produced a script for the Christian Georgians and Caucasian Albaniansis unique, although based in part on Greek uncials and the Armazi variety of Aramaic script. Armenia was located near the cradles of ancient civilizationsthe Mesopotamian, bordering immediately to the south; the Egyptian in the southwest; and the Indus to the eastand was affected by each, but most significantly by Mesopotamian. The name "Urartu", in the form "Urashtu", occurs frequently in Babylonian inscriptions. The earliest known mention of the "Armenian" people (as the

A History of Armenia
by Vahan M. Kurkjian
Background
When I became interested in Armenia, mostly because of my focus on Antiquity, I discovered there was not that much historical and antiquarian material online about the country, so this is my first contribution. The dust-jacket of the 1964 edition (for which I am indebted to Gerald Ottenbreit, Jr. of the Armenian Research Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn ) includes the following information on Mr. Kurkjian: Author, teacher, and community leader, Vahan M. Kurkjian was born in Aleppo in 1863. In 1904 Mr. Kurkjian published in Cairo, Egypt, the Armenian newspaper Loussaper (The Morning Star), in whose pages he and other noted intellectuals called for a national union for the Armenian people. The idea eventually materialized in the form of the Armenian General Benevolent Union , established in Cairo, in 1906, with Boghos Nubar, distinguished humanitarian, as founder and first president. In 1907 he emigrated to the United States and studied law at Boston University. Two years later he founded the first American chapter of the Armenian General Benevolent Union in Boston, after which the organization spread its branches throughout the States. From its inception he has been inseparably identified with the Union, serving as its executive director until his retirement in 1939. Mr. Kurkjian contributed countless articles to Armenian newspapers, and published a number of books and pamphlets. He died in New York City in 1961.

I owe gratitude to the Oriental Institute of Chicago University for its kind permission to reproduce some of the illustrations from Hans Henning's volume on "Exploration in Hittite Asia Minor." I also express gratitude to Mr. K. Armenica Representative in Armenia About Armenica The work with Armenica started in autumn of 1998. The prime purpose of Armenica was to provide a reliable and complete information source about Armenia and its related issues. By using the advantages of the internet we could provide the general public, schools, universities and other institutions with exhaustive information and reference to solid facts, which, unfortunately, is missing in most of the other similar sites. However, the extent of the project grew rapidly and consequently was taken over by Mediable which sponsors and develops the site. The history of Armenia is the first stage which is been put online. It contains about 350 pages of text, more than 1100 references written by about 280 different authors, researcher, politicians and travellers (four of these are Armenians, while the rest represent about 20 diffenrent nationalities from 3 different continents). Our ambition is to complete the existing material with pictuers, maps and other information as much as we can. Of course we aim to update the text as new events take place, but also if new information and discoveries are put forward.

ORIGINS OF THE ARMENIAN NATION
URARTU, THE FIRST KINGDOM IN ARMENIA Urartu (c. 750 B.C.)
By the 9th century B.C., a confederation of local tribes flourished as the unified state of Urartu. It grew to become one of the strongest kingdoms in the Near East and constituted a formidable rival to Assyria for supremacy in the region. The Urartians produced and exported wares of ceramic, stone and metal, building fortresses, temples, palaces and other large public works. One of their irrigation canals is still used today in Yerevan, Armenia's capital - a city which stands upon the ancient Urartian fortress of Erebuni. PERSIAN RULE ARMENIA PARTITIONED Armenia circa 250 B.C.
THE RENAISSANCE OF ARMENIA, TIGRAN THE GREAT Armenian Empire (c. 80 B.C.)
Seleucid's influence over Armenia finally dissolved when, in the second century B.C., a local general named Artaxias (Artashes) declared himself King of Greater Armenia and founded a new dynasty in 189 B.C. Artaxias expanded his territory by defining the borders of his land and unifying the Armenian people.
The "renaissance of Armenia" was accomplished during the reign of Tigran the Great (95-99 B.C.), who proclaimed himself "King of Kings." Under Tigran II, Armenia grew to a great degree of military strength and political influence. According to the Greek biographer Plutarch, the Roman general Lucullos said of this king, "In Armenia, Tigran is seated surrounded with that power which has wrested Asia from the Parthians, which carries Greek colonies into Media, subdues Syria and Palestine and cuts off the Seleucids." And Cicero, the Roman orator and politician, adds, "He made the Republic of Rome tremble before the powers of his arms." Armenia's borders extended from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean.
