The Armenian Land Question—Misunderstood Terrain By David B. Boyajian Geography, someone once said, is destiny. If so, the present geography of Armenia poses major challenges for its future. Small and landlocked, Armenia is outflanked by Turkey to the west and Azerbaijan to the east. To the north, unreliable Georgia controls Armenia’s routes to the Black Sea and Russia. To the south, thankfully, lies friendly Iran. Unfortunately, the Iranian provinces just to Armenia’s south contain millions of Azeris who might someday blockade Armenia by forming an autonomous pan-Turkic corridor from Turkey to Azerbaijan. To endure and prosper, Armenia must somehow break out of its geographical straightjacket by reclaiming the lands of historical Western Armenia, which, as we know, lie mostly within what is now called eastern Turkey. That territory was the primary site of the 1915-1923 Genocide, and much of it was to be incorporated into the Armenian Republic in 1920 by the Treaty of Sevres, which Turkey signed but later renounced. Perhaps four times the size of the current Republic of Armenia, the treaty territory constitutes about 15 percent of present-day Turkey. Significantly, it included a coastline on the Black Sea. WHY LAND?

The Flower of Histories of the East History enters the ranks of Crusader literature, but with the difference that its author, rather than being a pious and limited cleric, was instead a successful and influential general and tactician who had participated with his troops in numerous Mongol campaigns against the Mamluks. Het'um, born sometime in the mid 1240s, was a son of prince Oshin, lord of Korikos in Cilician Armenia. Though biographical details of his early life are lacking, his family clearly enjoyed great influence in Cilicia. His father, Oshin, was the younger brother of King Het'um I (1226-69) and of the kingdom's Constable, Smbat Sparapet (commander-in-chief of the army) (d. 1276). Of the author's own children, several were also deeply involved in Cilician affairs of the late 13th century: Baudoin became governor of Tarsus; Constantine became Constable; Oshin became regent of Cilica during the reign of Levon III (1305-07); and daughter Zabel (born 1282) was the wife of King Oshin (1307-20). There is uncertainty about Het'um's official functions throughout the late 13th century. He states in chapter 46 of the

    Chapter 1
    The Kingdom of Cathay
The kingdom of Cathay is considered the richest and most noble realm in the world. Full of people and incalculable splendor, it is located by the shore of the Ocean sea. There are so many islands in the sea bordering it that no one knows their number, since no one has visited all of them. Yet as far as the foot of man has travelled thereabouts, countless luxuries, treasures, and wealth have been observed. Olive oil is an item which fetches a great price there and is much esteemed, and kings and grandees have kept it with great care as a major medicine. There are numerous strange animals in the kingdom of Cathay, which I shall not mention. People there are creative and quite clever; and thus they have little regard for the accomplishments of other people in all the arts and sciences. They claim that they themselves are the only ones to see with two eyes, while the Latins see with but one eye, and all other peoples are blind. And their word is confirmed by the fact that, generally, they regard other people as imbeciles. For such a quantity of varied and marvellous wares with indescribably delicate workmanship is brought from that kingdom, that no one is capable of matching such goods in the scales. [g5] All the people in that kingdom are called Cathayans, and among them are many attractive men and women. But by and large, they have tiny eyes and are beardless by nature. These Cathayans have very beautiful letters, in some respects similar in beauty to Latin letters. It is difficult to describe the [religious] doctrines of the people of this kingdom. For some folk worship idols made out of metal; some worship cattle (since they work the land which brings forth wheat and other produce); some worship gigantic trees; some, the natural elements; some, the stars. There are those who worship the sun and those who worship the moon. Yet others have no belief or doctrine and lead their lives like irrational beasts. Although they are full of genius with regard to making all sorts of material goods, no acquaintance with the spiritual exists among them.

geography administrative division maps capital The Republic of Armenia lies in a triangular section of the Transcaucasus, bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey and the Republic of Georgia. With an area of 29,800 square kilometers (11,490 square miles), the landlocked country is just about the size of Vancouver Island. The capital city, Yerevan, lies on the Hrazdan River, and is home to some 1.2 million people. The next three largest cities are Gyumri (pop. 121,000), Vanadzor (pop. 74,000) and Abovian (pop. 54,000). Another important city is Echmiadzin, located some 20 miles west of Yerevan, which is the seat of the patriarchate of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The greatest part of Armenia is mountainous (about 300 feet above sea level), while one-third is pastureland. Forest and woodland cover 12 percent of the contry, arid land some 18 percent, and permanent crops cover 3 percent. The highest elevation is 4,095 meters (Mt. Aragats) and the lowest point is 400 meters above the sea level (Debed river). There are more than 200 streams and rivers in Armenia, none navigable, however, because of their steep descents and rapid currents. The Armenian countryside also boasts some 100 small, but picturesque lakes. One of the largest mountain lakes in the world, Lake Sevan, covers an area of 1,400 square kilometers and is about 650 feet above sea level.

THE MAPS OF ARMENIA Former Regions within Present Provinces in Armenia In order to complement our offerings in the area of Armenian Spelling and History, we now offer our visitors the opportunity to become acquainted with some Armenian maps. With the gracious collaboration of the National Academy of Sciences, we present the currently out-of-print Atlas of Armenia that appeared in 1961. Our research into this book came up with the startling information that the original films used in its production were all burnt when the printing house in Minsk (that produced this Atlas) was destroyed by fire a few years ago. We thought it useful, therefore, to present this work in this medium for use by students, pupils, and the general public. The other maps focus on the essential data of each (Soviet Armenian) region and (Independent Armenian) province. We hope that this may help students in Armenia or the Diaspora to become better acquainted with Armenia, insofar as this type of information is concerned. The Research on Armenian Architecture maps may be of interest to those studying the ethnographic and cultural aspects of the areas covered by these maps. We appreciate the kind permission given to us by the organization to use their maps.
