About Yerevan State Engineering University of Armenia is situated in Yerevan which is about 2800 years old. This ancient town, a coeval with Babelon and Karphagen was founded by the emperors of Urartu in the 7 th century B.C. and was called Erebuni. Later it was renamed Yerevan. For thousands of years Erebuni-Yerevan played an important role in the economic, political and social life of Armenian people. In 7 th centuries, as a result of conquests and destructive total wars, the process of the development of Armenian society, the formation of Armenian culture and the government were sometimes interrupted for hundreds of years. However, each time the broken bonds were restored. The development of Armenian society and Yerevan started at the beginning of the last century when the town became the centre of Armenian government and an urban centre.

Exchanges
Project Harmony empowers individuals to create healthier communities through international exchange and training programs. In the past 2 years Project Harmony-Armenia has conducted four international exchanges, both to Armenia and to the United States, enabling the participants to explore the education system differences and peculiarities of various countries, different cultures and people. The exchange participants are always selected through open and merit-based competition, which is carried out according to the review of the submitted applications, personal interview and test results.
Armenia-Based School Partner Exchange - 2
June 2005 - June 2006
US-Based School Partner Exchange

This spring, between March 28- April 14, within the framework of School Partners Exchange, a group of 23 Armenian educators made a reciprocal two-week visit to the US. The first phase of the exchange took place in July 2004, when 23 US educators traveled to Armenia, worked with their partners on online projects development by visiting them in their respective regions. As an outcome of the first phase of the exchange, a number of partnerships were established and online projects implemented on various topics, including civil society and democracy, culture and traditions of the two nations, their similarities and differences, etc.
During their trip to the US, the Armenian educators visited private and public schools in Boston and other cities, thus witnessing the teaching process in the US schools and US models of technology integration into the classroom. They were also exposed to different cultural events and got familiarized with the American style of life.

The History of Matenadaran
The Matenadaran is one of the oldest and richest book-depositories in the world. Its collection of about 17000 manuscripts includes almost all of the areas of ancient and medieval Armenian culture and sciences - history, geography, grammar, philosophy, law, medicine, mathematics, cosmography, theory of calendar, alchemy, chemistry, translations, literature, chronology, art history, miniature, music and theatre, as well as manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Greek, Syrian, Latin, Ethiopian, Indian, Japanese , other.
In this center of cultural heritage many originals, lost in their mother languages and known only by their Armenian translations, have been saved from loss. The history of the Matenadaran dates back to the creation of the Armenian alphabet in 405. It is named after the creator of the alphabet Mesrop Mashtots. This center of manuscripts has a history of centuries. The nucleus of this collection is the Echmiadzin Patriarchal Matenadaran.
According to the 5th century historian Ghazar Parpetsi the Echmiadzin Matenadaran existed as early as the 5th century. It got a particular importance after 1441 when the Residence of Armenian Supreme Patriarch-Catholicos removed from Sis (Cilicia) to Echmiadzin.
Hundreds of manuscripts started to be copied in Echmiadzin and nearby monasteries, especially in the 17th century. Little by little the Echmiadzin Matenadaran became one of the reachest manuscript depositories in the country.

Here are some quotes directly from past LCO campaign participants:
To define myself as an Armenian is as challenging and beautiful as trying to count the stars in the great Shadvan Sky. Intangible reality, overwhelming experience but full of possibility. Living as an Armenian without having experienced Armenia is like living as an orphan who has yet to meet their parents.
Anais Kadian, Shadvan 2004, Canada
Dolma is made with mum's careful instructions, grandmothers eyes found on the faces of children, songs of Ararat are as familiar as the Khachkars dotting the landscape. If it smells like home, looks like home then it must be home.
Datevig Simonian, Shadvan 2004, California, USA
The second I got off the plane my eyes were filled with tears; tears of happiness, of excitement and tears of joy. Everything was so beautiful, the old churches, the children and the sight of Mt. Ararat gave me the feeling of home and comfort.

Description: The Republic of Armenia or Armenia is a landlocked country in southern Caucasus, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan in the east and Iran (Persia) and the Nax§1van exclave of Azerbaijan in the south. Armenia is a member of the Council of Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States and for centuries has been on the crossroads between West and East. Yerevan, by any comparative measure, is a very safe city for its size (about 1 million people), and safer than most cities in Europe or the USA. Random crimes against individuals such as muggings, robbery, etc. are rare. Nevertheless, it is always prudent not to make yourself a target. Keep welling lit, main streets at night, taking taxis anytime after 10 pm and traveling with friends whenever possible. Avoid displaying large sums of money; be aware of your surroundings and any suspicious individuals. Large markets such as the Vernissage or Hrazdan are attractive to pickpockets because of the hustle and bustle and the crowds. Do not carry purses or backpacks which can be easily opened. Economic hardship has brought with it an influx of beggars and street children, but most are harmless.

ARMENIAN ARCHITECTURE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST
Adriano Alpago Novello
by http://www.csdca.it/seconda_pubblicazioni.htm From a strictly geographical point of view and in respect to Europe, Armenia is, without doubt, an oriental region being part of the continent of Asia. However, its particular territorial collocation makes this country an ever increasing type of obligatory passage between east and west, a bridge between two continents, in other words, a true “cross-roads in history”. On the other hand, the vicissitudes of its people are, in this way, extremely significant and have always testified a continual alternation of contacts and fractures, alliances and wars, encounters and clashes between the small population of Armenia and the numerically and politically larger, nearby states both in the east and the west. If, on one hand, this situation of instability and fluctuation of referral points, including the cultural aspects, may seem to mortify or render it “normal”, on the other it also represents an extraordinary possibility and necessity for enrichment of ever-renewing experiences, basically a stimulation or an uneasy acceptance of pre-constructed situations but rather it has “forced” the Armenian culture to accept a series of new experiences and also to verify and control in order to order to avoid the danger of assimilation. It should be remembered that the east-west relationship assumed an even greater latitude (or vice-verse) than the results of a simple exchange between nearby populations for Armenia was the well-known meeting point of both the caravans (and invaders) from even the extreme east (the China-India steppes) and the mercantile and political interests of the diverse western European powers. Think only of the commerce around the sea-ports such as Venice, Genoa, Marseille (A. Alpago-Novello, “Armenia at the time of Marco Polo”, in

National Association for Armenian Studies and Research
NAASR History
Before the establishment of NAASR, the field of Armenian Studies in the United States was virtually unknown and undeveloped.
Forty-five years ago, a small group of Armenian-Americans and Harvard University professors began meeting to discuss ways in which Armenian studies as well as Armenian culture in all of its forms could be advanced in the United States. By 1959 NAASR had realized its first major goal, the establishment of an endowed Chair for Armenian Studies at Harvard University, the first such chair in the United States. A second chair, at the University of California at Los Angeles, was established in 1965 through NAASR's fund-raising efforts primarily in the California Armenian community.
Since that time, NAASR has supported Armenian studies programs at a number of other American universities, including Columbia University, the University of Massachusetts, Wayne State University, Rutgers University, Tufts University, California State University at Fresno, the University of Connecticut, Bentley College, and more recently the University of California at Berkeley and Sage Colleges in New York. Largely as a result of the impetus provided by NAASR, ten additional chairs of Armenian Studies in the United States have been endowed, with a number of others in the planning stage. The establishment of Armenian Studies programs had the desired effect of increasing the number of quality books in English on Armenian topics. NAASR's
