My first introduction to the music of Central Asia or the Middle East was this double CD, which is one of six volumes from the comprehensive Music of Armenia Sadness and folk music often go hand-in-hand, though it is a bit unusual to hear such vibrant, happy songs performed in such somber tones (it's usually the other way aroundsomber songs performed happily). But the tones seem appropriate to Armenia, a country that is far more Diaspora than reality (the present-day Republic of Armenia is only a fraction the size of the traditional region of Armenia; there are more Armenians living outside the Republic's borders than inside). Hence, like the Jewish culture, African-American descendants of slaves, Native Americans, and Tibetans, the Armenian culture is shaped by loss and sufferingthat is, the struggle to keep the Armenian culture alive is, itself, the one enduring feature of Armenian culture. Of course, none of this information is necessary in order to listen to, appreciate, and enjoy the music on this collection. Presented here are several hours worth of wonderful music, some of the finest traditional folk music I've ever heard. Some of the music might be recognizable: Armenian melodies (particularly for the duduk) have found their way into a number of Hollywood productions, including The Last Temptation of Christ, Gladiator, Xena: Warrior Princess, and The Crow. All of it, however, is essential listening.

Historically Karabagh was the northeastern province of Armenia. The spread of similar forms of economic activity, customs, traditions, religious beliefs, and the same kind of mentality of inhabitants of the entire Armenian plateau brought about the reality that Nagorno Karabagh (Artsakh) along with other regions of Armenia constitutes a single entity in the cultural, economic, and linguistic sense. Numerous archeological facts of the eneolite, bronze and iron ages prove that the culture of Nagorno Karabagh is in fact a branch of a single Armenian culture and a great deal of parallels could be drawn with the monuments of the Armenian Plateau of the same period. Below is the description of cultural monuments, which still exist on the territory of the Artsakh Principality.

th century AD, which is the time when Christianity was adopted as Armenian state religion.) There are also monuments of prehistoric age, which are mainly prehistoric campsites, ruins of ancient Armenian settlements, a part of which belong to the Ararat Kingdom (Urartu) and Armenian Kingdom of Ervanids period, sepulchers, cult statuettes of early Armenian epoch, carved stones from Armenian Artashesids dynasty, capitols, various home utensils and coins. Thus, in ancient times (1 st millennium BC) the summer residence of Ararat King Rus I was found on the territory of what is today Istisu village. The largest and the most renowned settlement of pre-Christian period on the territory of Artsakh is the city of Tigranakert, which was founded by the Armenian King Tigran II in the 90-ies BC. Interestingly enough, this was the first out of four cities founded later by Tigran II in the different parts of the Armenian plateau and baring his name. The ruins of that settlement were found on the territory of the present Agdam region near the border of the Nagorno Karabagh Republic.

    ARMENIAN MUSIC IN AMERICA
    by GORDON RUMSON
The history of Armenia stretches into the most distant past. It is said that Noah's Ark rests on Mt Ararat which has long been a symbol of the Armenian nation [ view a 24 hour webcam ]. The people of Armenia are said (by Herodotus) to come from Thracian/Phrygian stock having an Indo-European language, and their religion, which dates from the earliest days of the Christian church connects them again to Europe, though their country is surrounded on all sides by Islamic nations. In the twentieth century Armenia was a part of the Soviet Union and became independent after its dissolution. During the communist era one element of Armenian culture received support and encouragement: classical music. With a conservatory in the capitol of Yerevan, Armenian musicians achieved considerable eminence. Perhaps most famous is the composer Aram Khachaturian , though there are many other important musicians whose attainments far exceed the small physical boundaries of the country (for example, at the Living Composers Project search by country).

Armenia - Population and Ethnic Composition
The forces of history have wrought dramatic changes on the boundaries of the various Armenian states; the population's size and the ethnic makeup of those states have also been strongly affected. In the twentieth century, particularly significant changes resulted from Turkish efforts to exterminate Armenians during World War I and from the large-scale emigration of Azerbaijanis from Armenia in the early 1990s. Population Characteristics The origins of the Armenian people are obscure. According to ancient Armenian writers, their people descend from Noah's son Japheth. A branch of the Indo-Europeans, the Armenians are linked ethnically to the Phrygians, who migrated from Thrace in southeastern Europe into Asia Minor late in the second millennium B.C., and to the residents of the kingdom of Urartu, with whom the Armenians came into contact around 800 B.C. after arriving in Asia Minor from the West. Although ethnologists disagree about the precise timing and elements of this ethnic combination (and even about the origin of the term Armenian ), it is generally agreed that the modern Armenians have been a distinct ethnic group centered in eastern Anatolia since at least 600 B.C.

Armenian Culture Armenian Language The language of Armenia is Armenian, but Russian is used almost as much. There are different regions, which produce different dialects. Cleveland Armenians are mainly from Malatia, but there are also those from Bursa and Aintab. You can tell a little about a person's Armenian roots by the spelling of his/her last name. Usually an ending of "ian" (such as Mirakian, Atkian, Arselanian) represents roots nearer the Turkish borders, whereas "yan" (such as famed Dudak player Gasparyan) usually hale from the northern, Russian area. Unlike many of the more modern languages, Armenian is considered a "pure" language, in that it is not really a derivative of any other. It does not have as its base the language of any other country, with the possible exception of Albania, because Armenia itself is such an ancient country. St. Gregory's has been operating an Armenian language school for 30 years. Armenian Music The instrument most associated with Armenian music is the "Dudak", which is a flute-like instrument made from the wood of an apricot tree. The "Zurna", which is similar to a clarinet, is also a popular instrument. It has a loud, piercing, nasal sound and is often associated with great gala festivities.

    1) Yerevan Lauds US Lawmakers for Affirming Armenian Genocide
YEREVAN (RFE/RL)Armenia welcomed the endorsement by a US congressional panel of two resolutions on Friday recognizing the Armenian genocide and expressed hope that they would pass the full House of Representatives. "We welcome the decision by the House International Relations Committee and consider it to be yet another step towards international recognition of the Armenian Genocide," commented Armenia's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamlet Gasparian. "We hope that the issue will be put before the full House of Representatives and that it will discuss and adopt the resolutions," Gasparian said. The resolutions urge President Bush to "accurately characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide" and call on Turkey to "acknowledge the culpability of its predecessor state, the Ottoman Empire." The overwhelming approval by the House panel on Thursday was also welcomed by leaders of Armenia's main political parties represented in parliament.
