Sing our Song: Where are the Armenian TV Shows?
Filed under: Armenia Humour Youth Pop Culture ...
Lider TV
Armenia TV promised Pop Idol 2 years ago, it never happened because of contracting and rights laws. The Public Tv tried something, but as always , it failed miserably because they are too intellectual for their own good. Now to the music news: CS records , which is part of the CS media city complex, which owns Armenia Tv, Tv 5, and now Hayfilm. This record studio is brand new, and I think can only spell good things as its well equipped and has a pretty modern way of working.
As I mentioned earlier, Hayfilm has been bought from the Government by Armenia TV owners B. Sargsyan and Gerard Cafesjian. In a somewhat controversial deal, CS Media Holding now occupies Armenia Tv, Tv5, A record studio, its own film studio, and Hayfilm. Positively this means: new films, new equipment and better salaries for staff. Negatively this means : A lack of artistic independence ( CS holding is closely connected with Kocharyan) , which could mean meaningless, commerical films being produced. Either way, time will tell. Next time I speak to you Armenia will be 14 years old! Happy Birthday

The Armenian Culture
Armenia's culture is unique in many ways. First, it is so much bigger than the nation itself that it overwhelms and dominates all other features of the Armenian ethnic identity. Second, it is very diversified. During its more than 2,000 year-old history, Armenia has gone through so many radical changes in its size and political status, that our culture has been influenced by and has influenced many other cultures. The many wars and other disasters in ancient and recent time tore the country apart and left a deep imprint in its culture. That tragic division had some positive consequences too, for instance, post-mediaeval Armenian literature has two different traditions, Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian, which being a part of a original literary heritage, have their own distinct linguistic and stylistic properties. Other important characteristics of Armenian culture are its permanence and longevity. Throughout its history, Armenia resisted invasion and absorption, relaying through its art one of the most beautiful manifestations of its identity. And, finally, when we say, for example, Armenian art, we don't usually mean art from Armenia, more often we refer to art of the Armenian people, who despite being scattered all over the world stubbornly stick to each other, to their traditions, their cultural heritage, their mother tongue.

As part of a cultural exchange initiated by Armenian president Robert Kocharian, the traditional culture of Armenia gained wider recognition and understanding during “Armenian Culture Days,” a five-day celebration of music, performance, and art held December 12-17, 2004, in Sharja, United Arab Emirates.
At the special request of the Sheikh of Sharja, Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, only artists representing traditional art and music were invited to participate in the event. On opening day, Armenians, Arabs, and guests of the Sharja Culture Ministry gathered at the Sharja Expo Center for opening ceremonies. After welcoming remarks by Arshak Poladyan, Armenia’s ambassador in the UAE, Armenian Culture Minister Hovig Hoveyan summed up the importance of maintaining traditional culture. “To know a people,” he said, “you have to know their traditional culture, their music and art.” He then introduced Armenia’s most widely acclaimed group of folk musicians, Shoghaken Ensemble , saying, “By presenting Shoghaken, we are able to take the listener back to the depths of Armenian history, to the depths of the Armenian spirit.”
A festive atmosphere reigned as Shoghaken performed the songs and dances of Old Armenia. The program included songs of longing, such as the ancient “Gorani,” presented by vocalist

“We want to have Armenian culture and the culture of the world presented to children here. In this way, we direct Armenian culture to the fatherland.”
http://road-to-armenia.com/aghpyur/aghpyur.html
Aghpyur Children’s Journal , published in Yerevan, Armenia, has long played a key part in the lives of Armenia’s children. The colorful publication has been a close friend of students, offering advice, encouraging creative use of their minds, and helping inspire a love for their homeland. Its pages feature stories, poetry, drawings, and commentary contributed by children of all ages, as well as writing by professional writers who write for children. The editor-in-chief is Tadevos Tonoyan, a poet and lecturer with a doctorate in Armenian literature.
“My purpose is to get the journal printed, and to educate and advance the children of Armenia,” Tonoyan says. “We want to have Armenian culture and the culture of the world presented to children here. For this reason, much work is translated for Aghpyur . Times are difficult, but there are still many talented children who deserve to have their work presented to others, so they don’t lose hope. They need to know they are not alone, and that others are with them in these difficult times.”
Aghpyur is currently funded by the Armenian government. Due to ongoing constraints, the journal is often short of money to print. Tonoyan has long stressed the importance of setting up a separate fund dedicated to ensuring timely publication of the monthly magazine. Citing

History Architecture Manuscript Paintings ... Art of Book History (Art and Culture) rmenian art has been profoundly influenced by Armenian culture, Armenia's long history, ever-changing geography and unique mountainous landscape. One of the most important periods of Armenian art was that from the ninth to the sixth centuries BC. Armenia was, at this point in history, the Kingdom of Van or Urartu. Citadels, temples, irrigation canals, carved stone seals, glass, ceramics, jewelry and arms were characteristic of Urartu's artistic endeavors. The Urartians were major producers of bronze objects. Excavation at the Urartian site of Karmir-Blur, begun in 1939 and continuing even today has resulted in the discovery of many household utensils, furniture decorations and pieces of military equipment such as helmets, arrows and shields fashioned out of bronze. Urartian smiths were also very skilled in the use of silver and gold. Vases, medallions and amulets were fashioned from silver while gold was used to create articles of jewelry. The smiths of this time are best remembered for their skill in decorating metal with mythological and animal forms. The intrinsic value of these metals made them prime targets for invaders who periodically looted the country. For this reason, metalwork of other periods cannot be documented as well.

Armenia-Diaspora Conference Report
Culture, Identity and Relations Between Armenia and the Dispersion
Prepared for the Armenia Diaspora Conference
Yerevan, September 22-23, 1999
My report is necessarily brief and is intended to be an honest and open discussion of a number of issues, mainly cultural, and some hard and harsh realities, many of which may be painful and hurtful. I offer no apologies for my forthright approach as I know of no other way of tackling such vital issues as the ones covered by this report and of identifying problems in a dispassionately and lucidly defined context and perspective. For the purposes of this report, the word culture is used in its broader sense; and while emphasis is on culture, many other aspects intricately and inextricably interwoven with the concept of culture, and which for some may not fit the narrower definition of the term, have been incorporated into this report. There are three parts to this report. The first is a background to Armenian realities in the 19th and the 20th centuries and traces the evolution of the Eastern and Western Armenians into two distinct halves. The second is made up of conclusions derived from the first part and of the premise I suggest as the basis for relations between Armenia and the Dispersion. The third part enumerates a number of concrete plans and proposals for such relations.

http://enrin.grida.no/htmls/armenia/soe_armenia/english/countrv/culture.htm
ERMC/AUA. : State of the Environment Armenia Armenian Culture Armenian culture in beginning of development of Armenians as a folk had a strong influence of Shoumer and Accadian cultures. Probably this influenced on development of fine arts, cuneiform, even language of first Armenians. It had a great influence of Assyrian and Babylonian cultures. We know, that people that time could build beautiful towns, they mastered many crafts, including processing of metal (iron, bronze). Urartian people had a very large pantheon and myths, but none of them is known now. Armenian pantheon was alike Hellenistic. From material culture of that time are known a pagan church in Garni (1st century before our era), were found many golden coins, monuments, etc. During the epoch of Tigran II the Great Hellenistic culture spreads in Armenia. It influenced on architecture, literature, music, theater. Though theater was not a new thing for Armenians: they had a primitive folk theater, but Hellenistic culture brought tragedies and comedies of Greek authors, and Greek actors showed them to Armenian kings and noblemen. Armenians also began to write dramas to be shown in theater. Were created not only dramatic, but also historical and philosophical works. All the literature of that period was on Greek language. Many Armenian princes were educated in Greece. Was increasing the influence of Roman culture on the culture of Armenia. Armenian Christian culture brought with her new music, literature, architecture. Theater was forbidden. Literature began to develop Christian way: the main themes were the problems of God and a human being. Were built beautiful churches, and some of them are stood till our days. Appeared a need in a native alphabet, and it was created in 405 by Mesrop Mashtots. Began the development of historiography; were created such works as "History of Armenia till Our Days" (middle of 5th century). Generally it is possible to say that the 5th century became the "Golden century" for Armenian Christian culture. As an event of Armenian Christian culture we can consider khachkars- cross- stones (big stones with crosses on them, made very accurately). Khachkars are found only in Armenia and nowhere else.

Faculty of Humanities, Institute of Asian and African Studies Mt. Scopus, Jerusalem 91905, Israel Fax: (972) 2 5883658 Introduction Background and History of the Program An active program in Armenian Studies has existed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for thirty years. By this means the University granted recognition to the significant role of the Armenians in Israel's complex society and in the Holy Land. In recent years the department of Armenian Studies entered a period of unprecedented and dynamic growth. Ever closer relationships with the Republic of Armenia and its academic institutions have been one factor. A recent agreement between the Armenian Patriarchate and the University encourages newly ordained clergy to continue their education at the Hebrew University. A new interest in Armenian Studies is exhibited by Israeli students. The number of students increases each year. The Hebrew University has striven to respond to this growing demand. The program has been enriched and now a broad range of courses is offered, reflecting the wealth and variety of Armenian history, language and culture. Armenian Studies forms part of the Department of Indian, Iranian and Armenian Studies in the University's Institute of Asian and African Studies. Georgian Studies are also taught in conjunction with the Armenian program. The programs of the Hebrew University and its Rothberg School for overseas students are fully accredited.

Linguistics meets Veterinary Medicine
13th Century Armenian Medical Book
on Horses has been Translated
An Armenian manual about horse medicine from the 13th century has been translated into German for the first time. The compendium is Armenia ’s oldest preserved veterinary medical work and offers an overall view of expert knowledge about horses during the late 13th century in the Near East . The Austrian Science Fund FWF supported this project and it was made possible thanks to an Austrian Armenologist, her excellent knowledge about the country and its language as well as her close cooperation with veterinarians in Vienna
This oldest known manual about Armenian horse medicine consists of 184 handwritten pages. It was written in the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia between 1295 and 1298. An Armenian monk proficient in languages and a Syrian horse veterinary were responsible for writing this work.
Now, almost 750 years later, a similar interdisciplinary cooperation has led to the work’s translation into German. For this project, the linguist Dr. Jasmine Dum-Tragut, from the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Salzburg , worked closely with scientists from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna

Cilicia and Greater Armenia
MAP: Greater Armenia MAP: Cilicia Cilicia became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, with Armenians maintaining a presence in the trading cities. Along with the Syrian and Greek Christian communities of the empire, Cilician Armenians generally survived and prospered until the beginning of this century. During the Great War, as the Ottoman Empire collapsed, relocation marches drove much of the Armenian community out of the area. Survivors returned to Cilicia under the promise of British and French protection. In 1920, fierce fighting broke out. The Western allies abandoned the military struggle, and the Armenian communities of Cilicia were ultimately driven south to Syria and Lebanon in the winter of 1920. (Many members of the Armenian communities of southeastern Michigan who immigrated from Syria and Lebanon have roots in the region of Cilicia.)
