The Mamluk advance into the region brought an end to this period of comparative independence; subsequent Armenian history is almost exclusively that of foreign domination. The Mamluks were supplanted by the Ottoman Turks, after which Armenia became the subject of a constant struggle between the Turks and the Iranian Safavid dynasty, until the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Russians moved in and took control of the area that is now the modern state of Armenia. Russian rule was at best heavy handed, particularly under Tsar Nicholas II, who closed Armenian schools and libraries and confiscated the assets of the Armenian church.
In the aftermath of World War I, with all of the major regional powers in a weakened condition, Armenia enjoyed a brief spell of independence from 1918 until 1922, in a federation with Georgia and Azerbaijan. Following the Bolshevik victory in the Russian civil war, it was then incorporated into the Transcaucasian Soviet Federated Republic, together with Georgia and Azerbaijan, and later as one of three distinct Soviet republics. The Soviet authorities tried to promote Armenia as a homeland and place of return for Armenians exiled all over the world. The seven decades of Soviet rule were, by the historical standards of the region, quiet and peaceful.

The information about the culture of people, living in Armenian mountainous region before of the epoch of Christianity , is less available, than the information about the history of that period. The diplomatic correspondence of the Egypt pharaohs with Armenian kings, remarks of the ancient authors, the results of archeological excavations, guesses and comparisons of all those facts with the Armenian legends of the later period - are basis on which develops not complete mosaic of representations about cultural life of the peoples, living in Armenian plateau in III-I thousandth years B.C..
The further stage of development of culture on the territory of plateau and modern Armenia is represented by monuments of the Bronze Age, relating to the end II- and beginning of I thousandth anniversary B.C..
The evidences of existence of Urartu are the two fortress-cities Erebuni and Teishebaini, located in the area of the modern Yerevan.

Second, it is very diversified. During its more than 2,000 year-old history, Armenia has gone through so many radical changes in its size and political status, that our culture has been influenced by and has influenced many other cultures.
The many wars and other disasters in ancient and recent time tore the country apart and left a deep imprint in its culture. That tragic division had some positive consequences too, for instance, post-mediaeval Armenian literature has two different traditions, Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian, which being a part of a original literary heritage, have their own distinct linguistic and stylistic properties.
Other important characteristics of Armenian culture are its permanence and longevity. Throughout its history, Armenia resisted invasion and absorption, relaying through its art one of the most beautiful manifestations of its identity.

culture language literature arts ... art gallery B.C. - 17th CENTURY Part Two: MODERN TIMES Armenian art has been profoundly influenced by Armenian culture, Armenia's long history, ever-changing geography and unique mountainous landscape. One of the most important periods of Armenian art was that from the ninth to the sixth centuries BC. Armenia was, at this point in history, the Kingdom of Van or Urartu. Citadels, temples, irrigation canals, carved stone seals, glass, ceramics, jewelry and arms were characteristic of Urartu's artistic endeavors. The Urartians were major producers of bronze objects. They were also very skilled in the use of silver and gold. Vases, medallions and amulets were fashioned from silver while gold was used to create articles of jewelry. In the 4th and 5th centuries AD very important events in Armenian history greatly affected the arts. As Armenia became the first nation to officially adopt Christianity in 301 AD, Christian iconography came to play a very important role in Armenian art and architecture. Also, after the creation of the Armenian alphabet in 405-406 AD by Mesrop Mashtotz, the written word helped to developed the Armenian language, literature and arts, allowing for the advancement of the art of the illuminated manuscript. Armenian scribes began to copy and translate Christian texts onto parchment adding to them symbolic illustrations and introductory folios. These manuscripts were then used in religious services.

    The History of Armenia
Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world with a recorded history of about 3500 years. The oldest known ancestors of modern Armenians, the Hayasa-Azzi tribes, also known as Proto-Armenians, were indigenous to the Armenian Highland in Eastern Anatolia. These tribes formed the Nairi tribal union, which existed until late 13th century BC. The legendary forefather of Armenians, Hayk (or Haig ), famous for his battles with Babylonian ruler Bel, most likely was one of the Hayasa tribal leaders. The words 'Nairi' and 'Nairian' are still used by Armenians as poetic synonyms of the words 'Armenia' and 'Armenian'.
At the end of the second millennium BC, another Indo-European ethnic group, closely related to Thracians and Phrygians and referred to by the Greeks as

Cultural tradition has been a means of maintaining a sense of national unity among widely dispersed groups of Armenians.
    Literature and the Arts
The Armenians became active in literature and many art forms at a very early point in their civilization. Urartian metalworking and architecture have been traced back to about 1000 B.C. The beginning of truly national art is usually fixed at the onset of the Christian era. The three great artistic periods coincided with times of independence or semi-independence: from the fifth to the seventh century; the Bagratid golden age of the ninth and tenth centuries; and the era of the kingdom of Lesser Armenia in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. Of especially high quality in the earlier periods were work in gold and bronze, as well as temples, military fortifications, and aqueducts. In the early Christian era, classical church architecture was adapted in a series of cathedrals. The circular domes typical of Armenian churches were copied in Western Europe and in Ottoman Turkey. The best example of the distinctive architectural sculpture used to adorn such churches is the early tenth-century Church of the Holy Cross on an island in Lake Van. The architecture of contemporary Erevan is distinguished by the use of pinkish tufa stone and a combination of traditional Armenian and Russian styles.

    Armenia - Culture: Aram Khachaturian
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Armenia's location in east-central Asia has produced an interesting culture. Located in the greater Caucasus region, between Russia and Iran, it is right between Europe and the Middle East. The culture of Armenia has parts of both of these very different regions.
Another influence on their culture is the fact that so many other countries have ruled Armenia. At different times, Turkey, Russia, Greece, and Persia ruled Armenia. Each influenced Armenia in different ways. A good example of this is Armenian folk music.
To most people, Armenian folk music sounds like Middle Eastern music. It is played with a kanon (a stringed instrument), davul (a drum), and most importantly, the duduk, an ancient woodwind instrument. Some people say that this music is thousands of years old. Throughout history, other instruments from other parts of the world were added. Today, Armenian folk music is also performed on the clarinet or violin.
In the early 1900s, there was a young Armenian boy who loved folk music. He loved it so much he brought it to the rest of the world. His name was Aram Khachaturian. Khachaturian was born on June 6, 1903. His family was very poor. Growing up in Armenia, young Aram loved the folk music he heard each day. He would just listen to the music. As a child, he never studied music. He didn't learn to play an instrument until he was older. Instead, young Aram tried to understand the feeling of the music. As he grew older, he decided he was meant to be a musician.
