Preface

Unanticipated tragic events can quickly escalate into a school-wide catastrophe if not dealt with immediately and effectively. Knowing what to do when a crisis occurs can minimize the chaos, rumors, and the impact of the event on students and community. When a disaster strikes, teachers and school staff members are torn between the need to deal with student reactions at the same time they are coping with their own reactions. This time often proves to be a time that they are least prepared to think quickly. With some advance planning, this process can be much smoother than when tragedy takes a school by surprise and no pre-formulated plan is in effect. Return to Table of Contents

RODNEY SLATER TO CHAIR UNITED WAY HURRICANE KATRINA RESPONSE FUND

Fund Proceeds to Address Short- and Long-term Needs of Individuals and Families Alexandria, VA (September 12, 2005) – United Way of America (UWA) today announced that Rodney Slater will chair a working group of national and local volunteers and staff to provide oversight and guide specific uses of the United Way Hurricane Katrina Response Fund. Mr. Slater is a former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and also former head of the Federal Highway Administration. He is currently a partner in its public policy practice group at Patton Boggs LLP in Washington, D.C. and a member of United Way of America Board of Trustees.
“In the wake of this great human tragedy, we are pleased that Rodney has agreed to take on this very important role as chairman of the committee that will set priorities and administer the assets of the United Way Hurricane Katrina Response fund,” stated Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way of America. “Rodney’s professional skills as a lawyer and a former cabinet secretary – along with his compassion and drive to help those in need – is the perfect combination of talents United Way needs to lead this important task of allocating millions of dollars to the victims of hurricane Katrina,” Gallagher continued.

2005 John Breaux Symposium
We Hold These Truths? How New Technology is Changing Foreign Affairs Reporting November 11-12, 2005 The 2005 Breaux Symposium will explore ways that new media technology—from satellites and cell phones to digital convergence and the Internet—has changed the creation of foreign news. The emphasis will be on what is happening now, with an attempt to predict future trends and how they challenge basic “truths” long held about foreign affairs and the news media . These “truths” will be explored in a book to be published under the Reilly Center’s politics@media book series. The contributors will create presentations for the symposium followed by discussion. It is being organized by David Perlmutter. Chapters and Contributors:
  • Technological change and foreign affairs reporting: A history and a challenge . David Perlmutter, associate professor, Manship School of Mass Communication and John M. Hamilton, dean, Manship School of Mass Communication

Under Governor Huckabee's leadership, Arkansas policymakers, as well as private organizations, have implemented a number of programs to provide students with access to quality instruction in and through the arts. Policies 2001 H.B. 1883 requires every public elementary school in the state to provide at least 40 minutes of instruction in music or visual art every week by June 2002, with every student in grades 1-6 allowed to participate in this instruction. Every class in every school is allocated a minimum of $100 to obtain needed supplies and equipment for music and art classes. By June 1, 2005, students in grades 1-6 must participate in this instruction, which must be provided by a teacher certified to teach art or music. 2005 H.B. 1034 adds that by the 2005-2006 school year, this requirement increases to at least 40 minutes of art and 40 minutes of music instruction every week. Very few other states require music or art instruction at the elementary level. 2001 H.B. 1883
