(787.4 mm x 533.4 mm x 304.8 mm) The Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection, 1991. 91.40 Hank Murta Adams Hank Adams' work bridges the vast gap between tradition and innovation. His busts recall centuries-old traditions expressed in marble, bronze and wood. Rather than portraits of mythic gods, heroes, nobility or politicians, Adams models a more generic image, intended to serve as a generalized reference to mankind. His busts have a spiritual kinship to the French artist Jean Dubuffet, whose figures are raw, spontaneous and direct. Surprisingly, the often fragile nature of glass is transformed in his treatment to a material of great mass and durability like the busts of his historical predecessors. Whereas traditional materials tend to absorb light, Adams' sculpture captures light and enables it to act as an internal resonator, enlivening the surface from within. In addition to a heavily faceted and pitted surface, Adams energizes his forms with embedded debris. These veiled references to a modern industrial world charge the work with political and cultural overtones, endowing a certain dysfunction to his character. Adams was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1956. He received a B.F.A. degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1978 and studied at the Penland School in North Carolina as well as at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. He currently lives in Albany, New York.

Senator Bumpers Pushes for Congressional Medals for Little Rock Nine Vice Principal Elizabeth Huckaby, 93, dies Elizabeth Paisley Huckaby, the vice principal of Little Rock Central High School who was given the responsibility for assisting the six black students through the first year of desegregation in 1957-58, died March 18, 1999 in Little Rock. She was 93. Mrs. Huckaby kept a diary of events at the school during that year and wrote a book from those thousands of pages of notes." Crisis at Central High" was published in 1981. The previous year, Time-Life Productions produced a made-for-TV docudrama of the same name based on the draft of her book. Her part was played by Joann Woodward. Robin Loucks, a former student at the time, told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, " She was a staunch defender of the Constitution." Mrs. Huckaby had continued to live in the same house since 1933, until health problems forced her to move to a retirement home three years ago. Her husband, G.T. Huckaby died in the mid-1960s. He had been principal of Pulaski Heights Junior High School in Little Rock.

March 10, 2004 Media Contacts: Mike Fetters, 703/284-2895 102 HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS TO ATTEND AL NEUHARTH FREE SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP AND CONFERENCE PROGRAM Two of the students each will receive $50,000 college scholarships. All others will get $1,000 scholarships. The two top winners will be announced at a Free Spirit ceremony at the National Press Club on March 24. The scholarship winners will be brought here to receive their awards and participate in a journalism conference which culminates with attendance at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year Award ceremony. At the event, students will have the opportunity to meet the 2003 Al Neuharth Free Spirit of the Year, Greg Mortenson, a Montana humanitarian who has dedicated his life to establishing schools in Central Asia. The program, funded by the Freedom Forum, began in 1999 to honor Neuharth, founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. The scholarships and conference program are designed to assist students who are pursuing journalism careers and to inspire them through conference sessions with prominent media professionals. The Close Up Foundation assists the Freedom Forum in administering the program. "We want to encourage these young people to become free-spirited journalists who dream, dare and do," Neuharth said.
