Fred Phelp's Baptist Congregation showed up on Thursday to protest the Fayetteville High School Gay Straight Alliance on Thursday. They numbered a little over ten. Hundreds of students and community members poured onto the lawn of the school to counterprotest, proving that nothing can unite a community like an ignorant bigot. The crowd was very loud and someone from the back of the crowd threw some projectiles at the bigots. One woman reported being hit wiht a rock and a corporate reporter was struck with a plastic bottle.
BMONK has compiled an excellent short video of the afternoon.

A Selected Bibliography for Teachers
by Tom W. Dillard, Curator
Butler Center for Arkansas Studies
Central Arkansas Library System The purpose of this bibliography is to compile in handy form a listing of publications and other materials which teachers of Arkansas History might find useful. This is not a comprehensive bibliography of everything that ought to be found in a school media center or public library. Rather, it is intended to help the individual teacher pull together the information needed to prepare lesson plans and effectively teach about our state. The teacher can use this list to get started, then build on it as time goes by. Almost every month something new and useful is published in the field. Becoming an informed teacher of Arkansas History is a life-time process, one which involves much readingbut it is a satisfying experience. The bulk of the titles in this list are still in-print and available. However, a number of out-of-print titles are included. These materials can usually be found in college and university libraries as well as the larger public libraries in the state. I would urge you to familiarize yourself with the Arkansas collection in your local libraries. Computer software titles, as well as vidoes, are not included in this list, but it is expected that these resources will become more numerous as time goes by.

TOP STORY>> Districts to start on their facilities
IN SHORT: The new state school improvement board established emergency rules so districts can keep children “safe, warm, dry and healthy.”
By John Hofheimer
Leader staff writer
The freshly minted Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation Commission on Tuesday authorized interim director Dave Floyd to begin hiring a staff and it adopted emergency rules and regulations for 120 days so that schools can begin applying for authorization and money to make critical school repairs.
Applications are due by July 1, but “we are ready, waiting on them to say, ‘Here’s the money,’” said James Warren, assistant superintendent for facilities at Pulaski County Special School District.
“We know what needs to be fixed first and foremost. They’ll have people looking over our shoulder. We need to spend on roofs. That’s where we are right now.
“The district has roofs and HVAC systems that are more than 20 years old and need to be replaced. Right now, roofs are leaking into classrooms, ruining floor and ceiling tiles,” according to Warren.

TOP STORY>> Single-gender school ready
IN SHORT: Boys principal defines the problem as the Pulaski district rolls out an innovative, if so-far unproven, approach to education.
By John Hofheimer
Leader staff writer
Like it or not, boys will be in one building, girls in another when Jacksonville Middle School starts the new school year August 19—the state’s first modern-day experiment with single-gender schools.
Throughout the country, there were 161 districts implementing or preparing to implement single-gender classes last spring, according to Marvin V. Jeter III, assistant superintendent for learning services.
Jeter said many of the teachers and parents he talked to were excited about the innovative program, but others were adopting a wait-and-see attitude.
Laura Shirley, who will serve as principal of the girls school, is out of town, but Michael Nellums, principal of both the boys school and the in-school suspension program in yet another building, thinks the idea may work.
“We’re looking for opportunities to change young men’s direction as it relates to academics,” Nellums said. “Boys have always done worse at this level. We’re hoping to change that picture drastically.
