Library Media and Information Technologies
[1] Objectives
The goal of the graduate programs in library media and information technologies is to prepare individuals for professional positions in a variety of information and educational settings. These graduate programs of study, located within the Department of Middle/Secondary and Instructional, are designed for individuals who may be (1) planning careers in school library media centers at the elementary, middle, and secondary district levels and at regional educational cooperatives; (2) planning careers as associates in public, college, and special information centers; and (3) planning careers as computer technology coordinators in public schools. To achieve this goal, the program seeks to create an environment in which students
  • Acquire attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to practice their chosen profession;
    Become cognizant of the human relation attitudes, knowledge, and skills required to develop, operate, and access information and instructional systems effectively;

      Summary of the program
      The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program is designed to improve student literacy skills and academic achievement by providing schools with up-to-date library materials and to ensure that school library media centers are staffed by well-trained and professionally certified school media specialists. The program is administered by the Department of Education and is the first program specifically aimed at upgrading school libraries since the original school library resources program was established in 1965. Numerous studies* show there is a clear link between the quality of library media programs in schools staffed by an experienced school library media specialist and student academic achievement. School library media centers can contribute to improved student achievement by providing up-to-date instructional materials aligned to the curriculum and instructional practices, collaborating with and supporting teachers, administrators, and parents, and extending their hours of operation beyond the school day.

    Mary Jo Lynch, Director, Office for Research and Statistics, American Library Association.
    Who are you? Where do you, your program, your library media center, and your state's programs and facilities fit within the national picture? You have the answers to some of those questions, of course, but you need national data to determine your place in the overall school library media tableau. In this column, ALA's lead researcher first summarizes the national data that sketch the most recent portrayal of our field and then sets the scene for an even more detailed portrait to come.
    The final report of the 1985-86 project was an impressive compendium of data prepared for what was then the Center for Education Statistics in the Department of Education.(1) The body of the report includes approximately 117 tables in three groups. Thirty-nine tables describe public school library media centers along a number of dimensions: staff, collection, expenditures, services, usage, technology, and facilities. Thirty-nine other tables provide the same information for private schools. Thirty-nine additional tables show estimates by state for public schools on the same variables. The report also includes a lengthy introduction with fifteen figures and twenty-two tables, some of them comparing 1985-86 data with data from surveys in 1958, 1962, 1974, and 1978-79.

The Salt Lake Tribune Reports On Lynn Cooper created a library that allows first- through third-graders struggling with reading to take home a book every night to read with a parent. Every two weeks, the children are tested, then mentored based on performance until they're reading at grade level. Such efforts made Fremont one of about 100 Utah schools that passed AYP requirements this year after failing them in 2004, according to the Utah State Office of Education. Comment...
