Evaluation of Internet Reference Resources for Geographic Information Materials
-Tsering Wangyal Shawa
Introduction
The Internet is a product of the United States Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) which was developed in the 1960's by the United States Department of Defense for their own networking. The primary use of the ARPANET was to develop a "top-secret" military network which could be used for military activities. However, it was later discovered that this network also offered a cost-effective mechanism for scientists and researchers to exchange their ideas electronically. In the mid-1970's, the development of wide area networks and Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) made it possible to connect networks in different geographical areas. These new networks also made it possible to allow more and more academic institutions to use the Internet system. In the late 1980's the Internet was opened to the public. The opening of the Internet to the public led to the development of various Internet search tools for accessing and retrieving Internet information. In late 1991 the CERN High-Energy Physics Lab in Switzerland saw the potential of the Internet and developed a multimedia hypertext document system called the World Wide Web. This hyperlink system has helped in locating and retrieving worldwide information on the Internet in various forms including audio, video, images, and texts. The development of powerful World Wide Web browser software, faster modems, and increased processing power of computers have made the Internet one of the most important media for sharing information. The Web has become an extremely useful tool for fast-changing information, ready reference, and information sharing. Business data, population figures, location of ATM machines, trip planning in the United States, and government information are some examples of information which is quite reliable, easy to access, and very useful for the user. More and more information is put on the Web every day for every imaginable topic. Because of this, the Web is becoming a widely used research tool. The information that the user finds in the Internet may or may not be "good" information. This paper will attempt to evaluate some of the geographic information materials available on the Internet.

Charles Dunn Finding Our Way: A Map of Our Past I was asked by the editor of the Arkansas Literary Forum to write a brief essay regarding my deep interest in and affection for old maps, particularly antique maps of Arkansas and the American South. This request was made, I believe, as a result of a comment I made in my 1999 “state of the university” address. In reference to our latest strategic planning effort, entitled Bold Strokes , I noted that we were proceeding to implement our peculiar mission as Arkansas’s public liberal arts university without a map I noted further that, like many ancient maps that described unknown portions of the world with phrases like “here be dragons,” we were certain to enter difficult, if not dangerous, areas. That comment was included in the context of my deep interest in antique, if not ancient, maps. I believe the editor’s interest in having me write an essay stems from his belief that my interest in maps has a purpose deeper than an appreciation of their beauty. To that belief, I must simply say “perhaps.”

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)
March 1997
Geographic Information Systems
What is a GIS?
Maps are part of our daily lives. We may consult a road map before driving to an unknown meeting location in the Research Triangle Park or a world map to compare the size of Arkansas and Ireland. Maps are also valuable research tools. A biologist may consult a topographic map to identify estuaries along the North Carolina coast and a demographer may refer to a census map showing the metropolitan statistical areas in the Midwest. What do these different maps have in common? Traditionally, they are in paper format, represent a single subject, and may become outdated quickly as statistics, geographical boundaries, or cultural features change. A solution to the limitation of traditional maps has emerged a Geographic Information System (GIS). A GIS links data to geography and brings a representation (a model) of the world to a desktop computer. A user can then customize and display information in map form which facilitates decision making. Through GIS, libraries and researchers have an exciting tool for analyzing geographically-referenced information. Current uses of GIS technology include land use planning, research marketing, resource management, demographic analysis, and education. Recent GIS applications include:

October 2004 that damn map . Depicting the results of the 2000 election, the reigning graphic of American politics divides the United States into two colors, red for Republican and blue for Democratic. It's also the basis of a lot of simplistic political analysis. "The 2000 election map highlighted a deep cultural tension between the cities (the blue states) and the sticks (the red states)," as Matt Bai put it in the New York Times Magazine earlier this year. David Brooks described this schism in more acerbic tones in the
