    Welcome to
Arkansas Stories, Arkansas Studies The Arkansas Studies Curriculum
Early Childhood - Fifth Grade The Arkansas Studies Curriculum is a continuous, vertically-integrated whole, with each year of instruction building on what has gone before and anticipating what is to come. It provides materials designed specifically to meet the legal requirements for instruction in Arkansas History at each elementary grade as well as for more rigorous instruction at the secondary level. The segments of the curriculum designed for Early Childhood through the Fifth Grade are now ready for adoption. The curriculum in Early Childhood through the 4th Grade introduces themes and emphases as building blocks that prepare young students to engage integrated units of Arkansas history in the 5th Grade. Content for Early Childhood through the 2nd Grade emphasizes Arkansas' physical geography and environment as a context in which families and institutions develop. With the 3rd and 4th grades the context shifts more toward social and economic interaction and how these elements have changed over time. In the 5th Grade the context shifts again, this time towards a chronological narrative that begins to integrate Arkansas' social, political, and economic themes with its important environmental characteristics as well as with national and international ideas and events. While each grade level features its own primary instructional media and content, extensive sets of images, sidebars, overviews, songs, primary materials, and links to other in-state and on-line sources of information will appear at each level. These supplemental materials enable teachers to expand the opportunities for investigation and discovery to meet the needs of particular classrooms or individual students. In addition, each of these resource sets will be accompanied by example Lesson and Unit Plans providing guidance and ideas about how these resources can be integrated and used within the classroom. All examples are tied explicitly to Arkansas Department of Education Frameworks.

Click arrow to choose REGIONS Y ou can understand Arkansas, its people and its settlements, by studying the landscape and geography. About 400 million years ago, Arkansas was under the ocean during the Paleozoic Era. Rock, known as limestone, was created when the creatures living in the water died and accumulated on the bottom of the oceans. Limestone is found in northern Arkansas. In western Arkansas, sandstone and shale were laid down, also remnants of the Paleozoic Era. Also during this era, the plateaus of the Ozark Mountains were formed, as well as the long ridges of the Ouachita Mountains. At the time dinosaurs roamed the earth during the Mesozoic Era, eastern and south Arkansas were under the waters of what would be the Gulf of Mexico. This was 130 million years ago. The Gulf of Mexico withdrew from Arkansas about 50 million years ago during the Cenozoic Era and left behind sand and gravel that is common in south Arkansas today. Today, the geography of Arkansas can be divided into the uplands and the lowlands. The uplands have mountains and are rocky while the lowlands are hilly in some places and low, flat and wet in other places. The soil is sandy and there are many rivers. Each supports many different plants and animals, farming, scenery and recreational opportunities.

Bush v. Kerry 2004 Electoral College Analysis

    by
    October 24, 2004
Who wins Arkansas on November 2nd could have major implications in an election that is purportedly going to be as close as the 2000 contest. Current predictions demonstrate that Arkansas hasn't been all that easily pegged, even though recently it has been marked as leaning GOP. However, it is my contention that Arkansas will go to the Republicans on Election Night 2004, and there are 3 clear reasons why that will happen. The first and most obvious of the reasons is the candidate's affiliation with the area. President Bush claims Arkansas's neighbor, Texas, as his home state. He's a Southerner. The Democratic nominee, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, on the other hand, has no geographic ties to the area. The selection of Kerry's vice presidential running mate, Senator John Edwards, a Southerner, was supposed to help Senator Kerry make crucial inroads into Southern constituencies. However, Edwards is from the eastern end of the South: North Carolina. And Edwards' place on the Democratic ticket has had little if no effect on swaying the voters of his home state according to months of past polling. So his effect on Arkansas is truly marginal at best. The second reason is Arkansas' own geographic tie to a certain neighboring state. Since the watershed election of 1968, as Missouri goes so goes Arkansasor vice versa. Apparently, the Ozark Mountains aren't the only things that Bellwether Missouri and Arkansas share. Their tilt in the national electoral contest is strikingly similar, too, with Arkansas being more decisive than Missouri. An example is George H. W. Bush's 1988 wins: in Arkansas 56%, while in Missouri only 51%.
