Introduction
Print Preview of Section Arkansas , state in the United States, classified as one of the west south central states. The term is appropriate, for west, south, and Midwest states seem to meet in Arkansas. The southwestern section of the state, with its cattle and oil fields, has the feeling of the Western Plains. Dairy farms and orchards in the northwest seem more akin to parts of the Corn Belt, while the cotton plantations in the east toward the Mississippi River are reminiscent of the Deep South. Arkansas’s natural resources are abundant water; vast forests of quick-growing pines and valuable hardwoods; and extensive deposits of oil, natural gas, and many other minerals.

Lesson Plans and Classroom Activities about Arkansas Home State by State Lesson Plans - Alabama Lesson Plans Alaska Lesson Plans Arizona Lesson Plans Arkansas Lesson Plans ... Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. AR The early French explorers of the state gave it its name, which is probably a phonetic spelling for the French word for "downriver" people, a reference to the Quapaw Indians and the river along which they settled. Arkansas, which joined the Union in 1836, was the 25th state. Arkansas' early economy was largely one of agriculture, with cotton as the main cash crop. Sawmilling was the earliest industry. Cotton and lumber are still important, but they no longer dominate the economy. Today, Arkansas' manufacturing income exceeds its agricultural income, but the state's basic wealth is still in its farms, forests, and mines.
Arkansas is a beautiful land of mountains and valleys, thick forests and fertile plains. The Ozark and Ouachita mountain ranges in northern and western Arkansas are known as the Highlands; the southern and eastern parts of Arkansas are called the Lowlands. Tourists enjoy the state's natural beauty, its many recreational facilities and its historic sites. Arkansas' mineral and hot spring waters are well-known.

AR-KS-MO Regional National Map Project
This project provides a fundamental building block for The National Map : multi-State data. The compelling achievement stitches together different geospatial data residing on servers in Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri. The data are from different sources, based upon different schemas, but will be styled in such a way that information will appear as though its all one source. The achievement will eliminate a common barrier found in many approaches in solving geographic problems where the data ends at the State borders. Scientists and researchers in Missouri and Arkansas will be able to use geographic data together to study water quality in the famed White River watershed. The same could be said for economic and business developers in southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri exploring ways to spark rural economies using geographic information from both sides of the State line.
Previous The National Map Partnership Projects have approached other technical challenges in implementing The National Map . This pilot however, is the first of its kind to involve statewide geographic databases from three different States. While the effort is a major technical challenge, it could not have been accomplished without the strong bond between geographic administrators and decisionmakers in these States. Each of the three States are active participants in a multi-State consortium known as the

Topography and Drainage Sedgwick County, with the exception of the northeast corner, lies within the Arkansas River Lowlands section of the Central Lowland physiographic province (Schoewe, 1949). The location of the County with respect to other physiographic areas of the State is shown in Figure 3. The topography of the County is characterized by the extreme flatness of the broad Arkansas River valley and the gently rolling slopes rising to the uplands adjacent to the valley. The highest point in the County, about 1,540 feet above sea level, is on its west edge, about 5 miles southwest of Andale. The lowest point, about 1,220 feet above sea level, is where the Arkansas River leaves the County to the south. Modern 7 1/2-minute topographic maps are available for all of the County [as of Jan. 1998] (Fig. 4). Figure 3 Map of Kansas showing physiographic divisions (from Shoewe, 1949). Pawnee and Edwards counties are in the High Plains section of the Great Plains physiographic province. For the purpose of detailed description, Pawnee and Edwards counties may be divided into three areas based on topography: (1) upland area, (2) valley area, and (3) dune-sand area. Upland area This area includes most of Pawnee County lying north of the Pawnee Valley and parts of Pawnee and Edwards counties lying between Pawnee Valley and Arkansas Valley. The area consists primarily of low rounded hills, which are separated by the many valleys that have been carved by the tributaries of Pawnee and Arkansas Rivers. The maximum relief in this area generally is less than 100 feet and in a few places in northwestern Edwards County the land is relatively flat. The maximum altitude in the area is about 2,300 feet at the Ford-Edwards county line north of Offerle. Valley area The valley area consists primarily of the valleys of Pawnee and Arkansas Rivers. The area contains flat, relatively featureless bottomlands and terraces. The Arkansas Valley slopes from an altitude of about 2,260 feet at the Ford-Edwards county line to about 1,920 feet at the Pawnee-Barton county line. The average gradient of Arkansas River is about 7 feet per mile. The Pawnee Valley enters Pawnee County near Burdett and converges with the Arkansas Valley near Larned. It consists of a relatively flat alluvial plain transected by many abandoned channels of Pawnee River. Adjacent to the bottomland is a broad flat terrace, which generally extends about a mile on each side of the bottomland. The Pawnee Valley slopes from an altitude of about 2,080 feet at the Pawnee-Hodgeman county line to about 1,990 feet at its confluence with the Arkansas Valley. The average gradient of Pawnee River is about 2 feet per mile.

A two-week Alliance Summer Geography institute will be held this July 8-19, 2002, at the Delta River Nature Center in Pine Bluff. The institute theme this year will be "Assessing the Resources of Our Rivers and Public Lands." Land uses along rivers and public lands, as well as conservation issues, are major topics of the institute. A major component will also be the demonstration of lessons applying content to the classroom.
Several field trips are planned to examine river and public land uses in central Arkansas. Utilization of Internet resources will complement the content and lesson strategy components. All teachers grades 4-12 are eligible and the application deadline is April 15, 2002. The institute will offer room and board for resident teachers as well provide materials and a travel stipend. Commuter teachers are also encouraged to apply. A $200 tuition stipend is also offered for those wishing to take it for graduate credit.
