Last month, young academic achiever won the National Geographic Society Geography Bee in competition with eight other Liberty-Eylau Elementary students.
"I remember having to learn about politics and religion of other countries when I was in college," said Amy Norwood, Justin's Gifted and Talented curriculum teacher. "Justin is now learning in depth what I started to learn in college. He does better than most adults I know."
"I felt great about winning because, I've been studying since August (of last year)," Justin said. "We all had to study a little more in depth to participate and compete in the bee. My mom is from Nigeria and she helps me a lot." During the geography bee, students had to provide both oral and written responses, as well as identify areas on a world map.

ARKANSAS GEOGRAPHICA FORMING AND DEVELOPING AN AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY PROGRAM
    Paul Gray, Russellville High School
    paul.gray@rsd.mail.k12.ar.us
When I first formed My AP Human Geography course, many parents and students asked the same question: What is Human Geography? AP Human Geography allows students to learn about world population issues, border disputes, and international conflicts. In addition, students are exposed to economic theories and models as well as world religions and the origins and diffusion of languages. They also study urban development, industrialization, and city planning, often experiencing these topics through field trips. Overall, AP Human Geography students and teachers will explore topics ranging from farming to pandemic disease. AP Human Geography really does offer something of interest to everyone.
Many teachers do not think they can teach AP Human Geography. The main problem many face is a lack of formal training in geography. Arkansas does not require prospective social science educators to take much geography. If one is a committed teacher and willing to learn, then AP Human Geography offers many wonderful opportunities and challenges. Becoming an AP Human Geography teacher requires following a few steps.
First, perspective teachers should attend an AP Human Geography Institute. There they can learn tips on teaching the course from experts who have already taught it. Prospective AP Human Geography teachers can get later refresher training at a one- or two-day AP Conference. Second, teachers should use the printed and electronic resources available from the College Board. Third, teachers can use the Arkansas Geographic Alliance for further assistance. Fourth, teachers can take a geography course or two to help along the way. Finally, you can contact me for information.

    OKLAHOMA - THE SOONER STATE
Geography Oklahoma, one of the Great Plains states, is slightly south of the geographic center of the U.S. Most of the state is a great, rolling plain, sloping gently from northwest to southeast. Highest elevation is 4,973 feet above sea level at the Black Mesa in the northwestern corner of the area known as the Panhandle; lowest, 287 feet, is near Idabel in the extreme southeast. Approximately 24% of the state’s total area is forested, principally the region bordering Missouri and Arkansas. Although part of the Great Plains, Oklahoma has four mountain ranges: the Ouachita in the southeast, the Ozark Plateau in the northeast, the Arbuckle in the south central part of the state, and the Wichita in the southwest. Throughout the northwest and the Panhandle are sudden outcrops of sandstone and gypsum, sharp ravines and stark hills. In the north central region are several salt flats. Largest is the Great Salt Plains, covering about 25 miles near Cherokee. The state’s major rivers are the Arkansas and the Red; the Red River forms the state’s southern boundary with Texas. Other large streams, all flowing into either the Arkansas or the Red, are the Illinois, Grand (or Neosho), Verdigris, Poteau, Canadian, Cimarron, Salt Fork of the Arkansas, and the Washita. On most of the larger rivers, great lakes ranging in size from 890 acres to over 102,500 acres, have been impounded. Largest of more than 60 such reservoirs are Eufaula, Texoma, Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Fort Gibson, Oologah, Kerr, Pine Creek, Broken Bow, Tenkiller, Hudson, Keystone, Foss, Fort Cobb and Great Salt Plains.
