The capital and largest city of Arkansas, in the central part of the state on the Arkansas River. It became territorial capital in 1821 and state capital in 1836. Population: 184,000. Encyclopedia Little Rock, city (1990 pop. 175,795), state capital and seat of Pulaski co., central Ark., on the Arkansas River; inc. 1831. It is a river port and the administrative, commercial, transportation, and cultural center of the state. The city's industries process agricultural products, fish, beef, poultry, and bauxite and timber. Its manufacturing industries are closely related with those of North Little Rock across the river. The settlement was a well-known river crossing when Arkansas Territory was established in 1819. It became territorial capital in 1821 and state capital when Arkansas entered the Union in 1836. In the Civil War the battle of Little Rock (1863) was fought there. The city became a center of world attention in 1957, when federal troops were sent there to enforce a 1954 U.S. Supreme Court ruling against segregation in the public schools. Little Rock is the seat of Philander Smith College, Arkansas Baptist College, the Univ. of Arkansas at Little Rock, and several other branches of the university, including the law and medical schools. Of interest are the beautiful Old State House, which served as capitol from 1836 to 1910 and is now a museum; several other museums, including the Arkansas Arts Center; and the Clinton presidential library. The present capitol building was built in 1911. The city also contains several state institutions and has a noteworthy symphony orchestra. Little Rock Air Force Base is in nearby Jacksonville.

Relief. The region discussed in this report lies west of the Flint Hills and is included in the Great Bend Prairie physiographic province of Moore (1940). It is characterized by the extreme flatness of large areas and low topographic relief in parts of the area. The belt of sand dunes trending northwest-southeast along the northeast side of the Arkansas River valley, the scarps formed by Cretaceous sandstones in the northwestern and northeastern parts of the area, and the rough area underlain by Ninnescah shale along the Ninnescah River provide the only prominent relief to an otherwise nearly featureless plain. The lowest points in the area, about 1,280 feet above sea level, occur along the Smoky Hill and Arkansas rivers where these streams flow out of the area. The highest points occur south of Sharps Creek about 3 miles north of Windom, McPherson County, and are about 1,700 feet above sea level. The wide, flat, poorly drained valley plain of the Arkansas River, and the wide, flat to gently rolling surface of the ancient McPherson Valley comprise most of the area here discussed. Low terraces occur along the Arkansas and Smoky Hill rivers, but are not prominent topographic forms.

Pawnee and Edwards counties are in the High Plains section of the Great Plains physiographic province. For the purpose of detailed description, Pawnee and Edwards counties may be divided into three areas based on topography: (1) upland area, (2) valley area, and (3) dune-sand area. Upland area This area includes most of Pawnee County lying north of the Pawnee Valley and parts of Pawnee and Edwards counties lying between Pawnee Valley and Arkansas Valley. The area consists primarily of low rounded hills, which are separated by the many valleys that have been carved by the tributaries of Pawnee and Arkansas Rivers. The maximum relief in this area generally is less than 100 feet and in a few places in northwestern Edwards County the land is relatively flat. The maximum altitude in the area is about 2,300 feet at the Ford-Edwards county line north of Offerle. Valley area The valley area consists primarily of the valleys of Pawnee and Arkansas Rivers. The area contains flat, relatively featureless bottomlands and terraces. The Arkansas Valley slopes from an altitude of about 2,260 feet at the Ford-Edwards county line to about 1,920 feet at the Pawnee-Barton county line. The average gradient of Arkansas River is about 7 feet per mile. The Pawnee Valley enters Pawnee County near Burdett and converges with the Arkansas Valley near Larned. It consists of a relatively flat alluvial plain transected by many abandoned channels of Pawnee River. Adjacent to the bottomland is a broad flat terrace, which generally extends about a mile on each side of the bottomland. The Pawnee Valley slopes from an altitude of about 2,080 feet at the Pawnee-Hodgeman county line to about 1,990 feet at its confluence with the Arkansas Valley. The average gradient of Pawnee River is about 2 feet per mile.

The early French explorers of the state gave it its name, which is probably a phonetic spelling for the French word for "downriver" people, a reference to the Quapaw people and the river along which they settled. Other Native American nations living in present-day Arkansas were Caddo and Osage. On June 15, 1836, Arkansas became the 25th state of the

Data Organization The data provided within these web pages were obtained from Federal and State agencies and are considered to be within the "public domain". These data were compiled within a Geographic Information System and the "summary reports" were created using a variety of "spatial analysis" techniques. How are these data organized? A total of 375 "Summary Reports" were organized into four (4) levels of geography:
  • The Incorporated City Limits of Arkansas' 100 largest cities. All 75 County Boundaries. 30 - Minute Commuter-sheds from the 100 largest cities. 60 - Minute Commuter-sheds from the 100 largest cities.

What kind of information is available? For this demonstration project we have provided four (4) categories of information. These categories are four of the selected information categories recommended by the American Economic Development Commission (AEDC) as important for economic development within the United States. The four categories of information summarized for each level of geography include:
