Arkansas Reduces Costs Of Gift College Investing PlanSM Little Rock, Ark. - The Arkansas 529 Plan Review Committee, sponsor of The GIFT College Investing Plan, today announced the selection of Upromise Investments as the new manager for its 529 college savings program. Upromise's selection was based on the new opportunities they bring to Arkansas residents, including a new lineup of investment options from the popular mutual fund company, The Vanguard Group. "Reducing costs and giving families the chance to supplement their own savings efforts through Upromise will benefit GIFT Plan investors across the state," said Dr. Linda Beene, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. "These improvements, along with more online account management features and investment options through Vanguard, are important steps in helping make higher education more affordable," she said. Enhancements to The GIFT Plan now include the following:
  • Lower costs. In conjunction with the transition to Vanguard's investments, Arkansas is reducing the portfolio expenses of the GIFT Plan to 0.85 percent in some cases a 50 percent reduction in plan costs. Additional college savings. Through the free Upromise rewards service, Arkansas families have the opportunity to supplement their college savings by earning rebates through everyday purchases.

Arkansas Introduces State Tax Deduction For Gift College Investing Plan SM Arkansas taxpayers are eligible for a $5,000 deduction when contributing to state's 529 college savings program Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas 529 Plan Review Committee, sponsor of The GIFT College Investing Plan, announced a new state income tax deduction eligible to Arkansas taxpayers who contribute to The GIFT College Investing Plan. This new benefit to residents of the state is the result of Act 1973 filed by Sen. Gilbert Baker and signed by Gov. Mike Huckabee. The new law gives Arkansas taxpayers the opportunity to make deductions up to $5,000 per year when making contributions to the GIFT Plan. For example, a married couple who each contribute $5,000 to a GIFT Plan account can each deduct $5,000 from their Arkansas taxable income, for a total household deduction of $10,000 per year. The new law applies to contributions made on or after January 1, 2005. The GIFT Plan also provides tax-deferred growth of earnings, and withdrawals from the Plan for qualified higher education expenses are currently tax-free.* More information on the GIFT Plan is available at www.thegiftplan.com or by calling (800) 587-7301. The GIFT College Investing Plan is a college tuition savings program sponsored by the State of Arkansas. The value of an investment in the GIFT College Investing Plan will vary with market conditions. The GIFT Plan is described in the current Program Description. Please read and consider it carefully before opening an account. Upromise Investments, Inc., Distributor, Member NASD/SIPC .

Walk Across Arkansas Program
Dust off your walking shoes gather up a few friends, co-workers, or family members - and Walk Across Arkansas!
Why Exercise? On average, people that exercise live longer ! The U.S. Surgeon General has determined that at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days , will decrease the risk of. . . How can we possibly walk across Arkansas? It's simple. Walk Across Arkansas is an 8-week walking program for teams of eight people. The teams will have a friendly competition to see who can log the most miles walking, jogging, or biking. Those miles will be recorded on an Arkansas map posted in the Extension Office and other places around our community, so everyone can see our progress! The team who walks the farthest "across Arkansas" will win, but everyone who participates will take home a healthy habit-walking for fitness. Do you think that you can make it from Texarkana to Piggott, or from Lake Village to Bentonville?
