Project * COL00615
Title Enhancing Field Crop Production in the Arkansas River Valley Investigator(s) Berrada, A Department Soil and Crop Science Objectives (1) Evaluate crops for their yield potential and adaptability to the Arkansas River Valley and develop best management practices (BMPs) for priority crops. (2) Determine the effects of water stress/irrigation deficit on field crops and develop strategies to manage limited water supplies. (3) Evaluate salinity and its effects on field crops in the Arkansas River Valley and devise BMPs to mitigate potentially negative impacts of elevated salt concentrations in our soils and waters. (4) Develop BMPs to enhance nutrient use efficiency and minimize the risk to the environment from over application, runoff, or leaching of nutrients and known pollutants. Approach Keywords Arkansas River Valley, Crop testing, Salinity, Deficit irrigation, Drip irrigation, Water management, Nutrient management, Manure management, Best management practices, Pollutants, Weighing lysimeter Progress Reports Impact Based on the resuts of this study and numerous soil test results, it appears that K is not a limiting factor to alfalfa hay production in southwestern Colorado. Further data analysis should help determine P and K required to maintain soil test levels above the threshold at which a response to P or K would be expected.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Weather Service (NWS) Partners with Dow Corning and Emergency Management Agency to Give Away 70 NOAA Weather Radios. NOAA's NWS Forecast Office in Wilmington, OH, recently partnered with Dow Corning, Carroll County Emergency Management, and the Kentucky State Emergency Management Office to give away 70 new NOAA weather radios. Dow Corning bought 70 NOAA weather radios and distributed them to hospitals, schools, nursing homes, day care centers, churches, fire departments, and government buildings in the area. The mayor, a county judge, the local police chief, NWS personnel, and Dow Corning employees went through the community in small groups distributing the radios along with NWS pamphlets. Each organization that received a radio was educated on how to use the radio, the timely information it would provide, and how to respond to warnings issued. Introduction
Fisheries and aquatic resources (ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans) are exceptionally valuable natural assets enjoyed by millions of Americans. They provide citizens with generous long-term benefits in return for minimal care and protection. These benefits can be direct financial ones that provide employment, profit, and dollar savings. For example, the seafood industry provides jobs for commercial fishers, wholesalers, and retailers. More indirect, but equally valuable, benefits of fish and aquatic ecosystems include recreational boating, sport fishing, swimming, relaxation, and natural beauty. Appreciation of fisheries and aquatic systems has been accompanied by increasing concern about the effects of growing human populations and human activity on aquatic life and water quality. Pesticides are one group of toxic compounds linked to human use that have a profound effect on aquatic life and water quality.

Arkansas Procurement Assistance Center
The Mission of the Arkansas Procurement Assistance Center is to provide training and resources that help Arkansas businesses generate revenues and thereby create or retain jobs for Arkansans through effective government contracting. The Center was established in 1988 to provide government contract assistance and education to the businesses of Arkansas. In October 1993, the University entered into a Cost Sharing Cooperative Agreement with the Defense Logistics Agency of the Department of Defense to participate in the nationwide Procurement Technical Assistance Program. Under this agreement, APAC serves Arkansas businesses and public agencies, the University’s Cooperative Extension Service and the DOD share the costs, and the budget is supplemented by 3rd party matching funds and in-kind contributions. Major sponsors in recent years include Malvern National Bank and Highland Industrial Park. In October 2004, the University entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ouachita Partnership for Economic Development to provide cash and in-kind support for a satellite in Camden to serve south-central Arkansas.
