Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

A federal lawsuit on an Arkansas teen-ager's behalf asks a judge to mandate reforms at Mountain Park religious reform school in Missouri, and in Florida at their Arcadia school, calling their disciplining practices abusive. Missouri's Mountain Park Boarding Academy, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau, has subjected students to austere forms of discipline, denied outside communication, limited bathroom breaks and allowed students to sleep as little as five hours a day. The suit is on behalf of 17-year-old Jordan Blair, who attended Mountain Park last year and later transferred to the sister Palm Lane Academy in Florida. Blair, of Alma, Ark., bolted from the Florida school while on an errand with a school worker. Mountain Park is an independent Baptist school enrolling 120 girls and 35 boys near Patterson, Mo., about 110 miles south of St. Louis. Palm Lane, in Arcadia, enrolls about 50 students.

Parents pay $14,000 in annual tuition and must commit their children for at least a year. Visits with family members are limited.

Batesville spares rod more than others
By Guard Staff The Southside School District has only about 60 percent of the enrollment of the Batesville School District, but it gave its students over 10 times as many paddlings as Batesville did during the 1996-97 school year. Such a contrast - Southside's 852 instances of corporal punishment to Batesville's 80 - is a perfect illustration of the contrasting philosophies on the application of the "board of education" to the "seat of learning" in Arkansas, which leads the nation in school spankings according to a national report. While most area schools reported more paddlings being given to junior high students than older and younger pupils, Batesville Junior High gave no paddlings in 1996-97 according to Department of Education figures and has almost never paddled for the past several years, principal Harry Crossett said. "We don't use corporal punishment in the junior high building," Crossett said. "Saturday School is much more effective, and from a legal standpoint, it's a lot less complicated as well."

Fall 2001 Volume 122 No. 01 Russell Tranbarger (Ex '48) attended the academy's elementary division in the 1940's when his father and mother, Rev. William David Tranbarger and Nova Smith Tranbarger, were both enrolled in the high school division. Russell and his sister, Judy Tranbarger Bible, who was too young to attend the academy when the family lived in the front apartment of the old administration building, visited the campus this past summer.
Russell and his wife, Mildred, live near their two daughters and their families in Fairfield, Maine. Judy lives in Greeneville, TN. Their brother, Carroll, attended the academy as well and is now living and working in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Russell Tranbarger and Judy Tranbarger Bible stand in front of a picture of their father and mother, who both graduated from the academy in the Class of 1948. The Tranbarger boys apparently had some time on their hands occasionally when they were young students here. Russell recalls the day the smell of peanut butter got the best of them and they sneaked into the school store, took a supply of peanut butter and crackers (which were manufactured on campus under the supervision of Mrs. William Hall), and took their treasure to the old swimming pool to eat. Unfortunately for them, Mr. York Stewart was watching from his dorm window. Mr. Stewart gave them a whipping, then summoned their mother, who whipped them again. When their father got home they got their third whipping in one day.

I am only just waking up from the violence and spiritual/ physical and sexual oppression that can only be brought clarity/understood or invoked by combining in ones head what is going on now at Abu Grabe Prison in Iraq and the first five minutes of the movie “Rabbit Proof Fence”; showing the removal of part White part Aboriginal children from their parents in Australia in an attempt to educate them and selectively breed them back into the white population (the film shows their first days in boarding school not far from my first days at Dorset House).
I witnessed violent abuse and beatings on my body and on the body of others, homosexual and sexual acts performed on me by staff and other boys, racism public humiliation and spiritual degradation and mental torture in both these schools.

BACKGROUND HISTORY Arkansas had been a state only 43 years, and the Catholic diocese of Little Rock had been in existence only 36 years when a national eagerness to develop the whole Continental United States in the 19th century inspired the government to give large grants of land to railroad companies willing to encourage settlers to populate both sides of the track in western Arkansas. The Little Rock/Fort Smith branch of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad Company invited Indiana BENEDICTINES to Logan county, Arkansas, to minister to the German Catholic settlers.
At the time there was great unrest in Europe, especially in Germany, Prussia, and Ireland, and citizens were looking for a way out. The railroad company sensed an opportunity and offered land grants to religious institutions with European roots recently founded in Indiana and asked them to establish churches and schools along the railroad in Arkansas.
After W.D. Slack, land commissioner for the railroad company, had secured a commitment from the monks of St. Meinrad Abbey

"Expatriate SchoolingCoping with Issues and Costs." By William L. Bainbridge and Allan L. Forsythe. Relocation Journal. Winter 1993.
INTERNATIONAL RELOCATION
EXPATRIATE SCHOOLING - - COPING WITH ISSUES AND COSTS by
Allan L. Forsythe and William L. Bainbridge International relocation managers are under pressures from families for maximum service while corporate leaders make efforts to curtail escalating costs. Significant efforts have been made by some companies to control expenses in areas such as personal transportation, tax reimbursement, moving and storage, furniture, real estate and lease assistance, meals, lodging and auto. Regretfully, since schools are a sensitive issue and very few international relocation managers consider themselves to be school experts, schooling frequently continues to be an area of high cost with little control on the part of the corporation. Many corporate international relocation policies continue to read like blank checks in the area of schooling for dependents. Typical policies indicate that the company will pay registration fees, tuition, books and local transportation costs reimbursed for children attending grades K-12. Boarding school costs are paid if the family deems local schooling options to be inadequate. While such policies on the surface seem perfectly reasonable, they can be quite costly. We have examined many situations where families with children enrolled in very average public school systems in the United States expect the company to pick up the tab for the most elite private schools on their new assignment. The numbers can be staggering. We know of many cases where families have submitted and have been granted schooling reimbursement in excess of $60,000 per year. This seems particularly wasteful when in some of the cases a less expensive alternative would have been better for the dependent children in terms of their transition back into U.S. schools and universities.
