Baptist boarding schools closes in Missouri, Florida Associated Press/May 30, 2004 By Jim Suhr St. Louis A southeast Missouri religious reform school questioned for its strict disciplining of troubled teenagers has closed, ending a run marked lately by dwindling enrollment and legal dustups over its methods. Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy, founded by a man who once operated a controversial school in Mississippi, closed Friday, along with its sister school, Palm Lane Academy in Florida, the school's principal said. "It is just time," Mountain Park Principal Sam Gerhardt told the Wayne County Journal-Banner. "We've been in some battles for the last couple of years. It is just time for us to do something different." A woman who answered the telephone Saturday at Mountain Park, located about 110 miles south of St. Louis, refused to comment. She said Gerhardt was unavailable but might publicly discuss the matter within days. Calls to Gerhardt's home Saturday night went unanswered. The school's Web site - http://www.mountainparkacademy - has been deactivated, and the school's attorney, John Oliver, said Saturday, "I just don't know what the situation is." Suit Says Mountain Park Religious School Uses Barbaric Discipline Founder Calls Ex-Student's Allegations Ridiculous St. Louis Post-Dispatch/July 9, 2002 By Matt Franck A lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court accuses a religious reform school near Poplar Bluff, Mo., of abusing its students with "barbaric means of thought control, humiliation, degradation and punishment." The suit against Mountain Park Boarding Academy says students are subjected to austere forms of discipline, denied outside communication and limited to two short bathroom breaks and as little as five hours of sleep a day. The suit was filed last week in Cape Girardeau on behalf of Arkansas resident Jordan Blair, 17, who attended Mountain Park last year and later transferred to Palm Lane Academy, a sister school in Florida. Blair, of Alma, Ark., escaped from the Florida school while on an errand with a school employee. The suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages. But Blair's attorney, Oscar Stilley of Fort Smith, Ark., said his main goal is to force the two schools to change how they discipline and treat students. The suit asks the court to mandate reforms at the school immediately. "That is the central issue: to stop this kind of mistreatment," Stilley said Monday. Mountain Park's founder, the Rev. Bob Wills, described the allegations Monday as "ridiculous" and said he trusted the lawsuit would be dismissed. He said the suit is based exclusively on accounts from one student with questionable credibility.

Former students, prosecutors question methods of some 'tough love' schools By Cara Connelly KY3 News (Springfield, MO), April 30, 2004 Jordan Blair has vivid memories of the treatment he and other students received at Mountain Park Baptist Boarding School, a private reform school in Patterson, Mo., north of Poplar Bluff. He says beatings, sleep deprivation and isolation from the outside world were part of the curriculum. "There were other kids getting slammed around, pushed around, real aggressive behavior,” said Blair, 19. “I would sit there and cry myself to sleep at night knowing that I'm standing there, I’m watching this happen and not doing anything about it." Blair’s parents sent him to the school in 2001 at age 16 to keep him from having to go to an Arkansas juvenile facility. A judge in Crawford County, Ark., ruled Blair was a juvenile delinquent after convicting him of making a terroristic threat. The former student remembers severe consequences for misbehavior at Mountain Park, which is a mission of the Mountain Park Baptist Church. "We have sleep deprivation,” said Blair. “Bathroom privileges are extremely limited. You are watched. You have someone who is within what they call slapping distance."

Porter, Principal Chief, Muskogee Nation I submit this as my annual report of the conditions of the Creek Schools during my term of office as Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Muskogee Nation. Financial reports of the expenditures of school expenses have been rendered to your office quarterly during the year; you have them. You are aware that our school system as now instituted is yet new, being but a few years ago when the present extensive up-building of the extraordinary fine system of schools were build with the newly acquired school fund by the Oklahoma sale a few years ago. Before that time the school fund of the Nation was insufficient to accomplish much with. Those that received advanced education in those small schools are now mostly in other employment. Therefore we have very few of our educated people in the school work; a host of new students of this new system preparing to teach and aid in the schools of their fellow men. Arguments have been used against the Creek people that their vast school system has failed to develop graduated students not accounting for the short period of the existence of these schools. This accusation amounts to a very galic belch from professors who are most profoundly interested in saying that very thing without noting records. I must say that I am highly encouraged with the prospective good results of the great interest the Creek people are taking in their schools. The pupils of Indian blood excel in penmanship, spelling, and reading. They are apt and quick mathematicians, they are fond of history and geography. They have superlative strong nerve and steady hand for the finer arts. They have strong passions and supreme resisting wills that they are not easily discouraged with their tasks.
