TEAMS -Teacher Education for Arizona Math and Science is in its sixth year at Arizona State University. In July 2000, the program became a collaborative between Chandler Unified School District and Arizona State University. This institutionalization within the College of Education (COE) is now called the TEAMS ASU - Chandler Professional Development Center. TEAMS is a science and mathematics secondary masters degree and certification program that also provides a middle level endorsement. The program was created as part of a National Science Foundation grant with the ASU Arizona Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (ACEPT) over the past five years. Beginning this year program support comes from the COE and the Arizona Teacher Excellence Coalition (AzTEC), a multiple university/community college collaborative that encompasses the entire state of Arizona.

State Department of Education Requirements Although all states must comply with the federal provision of No Child Left Behind, many states have programs for mid-career changers individuals who already have a bachelor's degree—that are alternatives to the traditional route to teacher certification. Just as teacher certification requirements differ from state to state, so do alternative certification program offerings. In the State Departments of Education directory, RNT provides resources developed by the National Center for Alternative Certification: a coded list of alternative certification programs offered in each state, and an alternative licensure key that describes details about the types of programs offered by each state.
As this information about alternative certification is subject to change, you will still want to call for the most up-to-date information. Some states offer this information online and others will mail you a packet about state-approved alternative certification programs and requirements.

Two one-credit-hour constitution and government courses necessary to meet Arizona teacher certification requirements are now available through Northland Pioneer College over the Internet. Tuition for each class is just for in-state residents, or for out-of-state students, plus a course fee. You can register online, or by phone if paying fees with a VISA or MasterCard, by calling (800) 266-7845. NPC Political Science Instructor John Deaton has been teaching the Arizona Constitution class for 26 years. "This online course is unbelievably rich in information," he said. "There is no way to present all of this data in a traditional two-day class. Students can complete just the required sections, or go off and explore other areas of personal interest. We are providing links to many state agencies for real-time data downloads," Deaton added. Deaton used the same pattern for the U.S. Constitution course.

Finding new breed of teachers Pilot certifies people from other fields Carrie Watters
The Arizona Republic
Aug. 3, 2005 12:00 AM Marguerite Hinojosa recently gave up a fast-paced job producing Good Morning Arizona for a new adrenaline rush: teaching high school students.
The 47-year-old newswoman is one of six Arizona teachers in a new state program that puts people with career experience, but not the typical education background, into classrooms. If the two-year pilot succeeds, traditional public high school students may find more non-traditional teachers in their classrooms.
About 48 states have experimented with ways to certify non-traditional teachers. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
Arizona has explored alternative methods before. This is the first attempt under state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne. Under the pilot program, called Alternative Secondary Path to Certification, candidates who hold bachelor's degrees in non-teaching fields can land in classrooms as full-time paid teachers after intensive summer training. "I never knew what would give me the rush that chasing a news story gave me," Hinojosa said.

History Education in the United States: A Survey of Teacher Certification and State-Based Standards and Assessments for Teachers and Students
Methods of Gathering and Verifying Data
A central goal of this project was to develop a snapshot of precollegiate history education in the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Hired by the Organization of American Historians as the lead researcher for this OAH/AHA project, Sarah Drake Brown requested information in the following categories:
  • certification requirements for history teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels
  • standards in history for teachers
  • standards in history for the K-12 curriculum
  • high school graduation requirements and exit examination requirements in history
  • state criterion-referenced examinations in history
  • statewide resources for history teachers and contact information for state history/social studies specialists
  • statewide associations for teacher membership This proved to be a massive amount of data, so the information was collected in separate steps: independent searches for data, preliminary public presentations of initial findings, and early contact with numerous representatives in history education from each of the states and the District of Columbia. Preliminary data was then collected from the web sites created and maintained by the various departments of education and certifying bodies in each of the states. This information was then compiled into reports for each state, organized into sections based on the categories listed above.

    Issues Challenging Education
Help Wanted: One Million+ Good Women and Men
Jim Veitch, Pi-Kuei Tu, Renee Franklin, and John Pendergrass The United States will have to replace up to 2 million of its current 2.7 million teachers during the next 10 years (U.S. Department of Education, 1998). New York City will need 30,000 teachers within the next five years, Maryland will need 11,000 within the next two years (Bradley, 1998), and North Carolina will need up to 70,000 within 10 years. A number of factors combine to create teacher shortages. Too few people are entering teaching. Too many leave. Demographics and state policy decisions contribute to shortages. Teachers now have more career options than ever before. Better salaries in other professions are luring people away from teaching (U.S. Department of Education, 1998; Feldman, 1998). Many teachers have reached retirement age, and almost one-third of teachers has taught for more than 20 years. Close to one million teachers are on the verge of retiring (Riley, 1998). Student enrollments are increasing. Legislators and parents are demanding

    Enrollment By State
The number of students in charter schools varied greatly across the 24 states with operating charter schools in the 1997-98 school year ranging from fewer than 100 students in Kansas to more than 50,000 students in California. Regardless of the size of the state's student population, charter schools continued to enroll a small percentage of public school students.
    • During the 1997-98 school year, our data show that charter school enrollment totaled 162,130 in 678 of the 717 open charter schools. This enrollment was 0.6 percent of the students in public schools (in 1996-97) in the 24 charter states that had operating charter schools.
    • Arizona, the state with the second highest number of charter school students, had an estimated 25,128 students enrolled in charter schools. This enrollment was more than three percent of the state's public school enrollment, which makes Arizona the state with the highest percentage of public school students enrolled in charter schools.
    • Charter school enrollment in the remaining states (omitting Arizona) ranged from less than 0.1 percent to 1.6 percent of public school enrollment.
