New center to improve technology-enhanced teaching and learning of science By Kathleen Maclay, Media Relations BERKELEY The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $10 million for the center, which is designed to bring together teachers, students, researchers, policy-makers and high-tech designers from Berkeley to Boston to study how instructional technology can improve science education in grades 6 through 12. It also will create classroom-tested technological tools to be woven into science teaching. The Technology-Enhanced Learning in Science center (TELS) is one of 16 centers the NSF has established "to understand more deeply what it means to be a good teacher and what it takes to help students be successful in science, technology, engineering and mathematics," according to Judith Ramaley, assistant director of NSF's Education and Human Resources Directorate.

powered by Google What Campuses are Doing In the fall of 1998, The U.S. Department of Education, Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities program awarded 2-year grants to several institutions of higher education to conduct interventions designed to correct misperceptions of student alcohol and other drug use among a large or influential subpopulation of students. Subpopulations targeted included first year students, members of Greek organizations and athletes. While most schools used campus media to disseminate messages, other innovative strategies were also used by some grantees, including small group presentations and mailings. The following schools were awarded grants. Click on the school name for project summaries written by grantees and for examples of campaign messages and materials. So-called media PCs are available for purchase, but you can convert your own computer to do the job, too. Here's Mike Goldfein: Also Online Watch the video PowerCinema Microsoft Windows Media Center TitanTV The trend is growing for home computers to do a whole lot more than just surf the Internet and send e-mail. The most popular media computer is Microsoft's Media Center PC. But you can only buy them pre-made. Cost? At least $1,200, often more. Now, if you don't mind installing a TV tuner card in your existing computer, it's not tough.

E-mail it to a friend Kids' rooms becoming multimedia centers 10:34 AM Mountain Standard Time on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 Associated Press Report WASHINGTON (AP) "Go to your room and do your homework" may not sound like such a bad idea to many children. Nearly a third of kids 8 to 18 say when they're doing schoolwork at home, they're often talking on the phone, surfing the Web, instant messaging, watching TV or listening to music at the same time. The finding is part of a Kaiser Family Foundation survey that showed what many parents already know - kids' rooms are turning into multimedia centers. For instance, 54 percent of children's bedrooms had a VCR or DVD player last year, up from 36 percent in 1999, and 31 percent of kids had a computer in their room, up from 21 percent. What effect so-called "media multitasking" has on the often fragile ability of kids to focus is unclear because detailed research is quite new, said Vicky Rideout, the foundation vice president who directed the study. "We are not necessarily saying that kids spending more time with more media is a bad thing," Rideout said. "This is something all parents have to decide based on what age their kids are, how they are doing in school and the parents' own values."
