Mobility, language barrier top woes By Betty Reid and Sarah Anchors
The Arizona Republic
Oct. 19, 2002 Urban schools often fall short when compared with their suburban counterparts because their students have fewer resources, often battle a language barrier and move more frequently, educators say. The underperforming-schools label given to 70 percent of Phoenix Union's high schools, 45 percent of Roosevelt's elementary schools and 69 percent of Phoenix Elementary schools came as little surprise to educators grappling with typical urban problems, such as a large number of foreign-born students, whose families are often at the bottom economic rung. Thirteen schools from the Creighton, Osborn, Cartwright and Wilson districts also landed on the underperforming list. One bright spot in central Phoenix was the Madison School District, whose seven campuses passed the state's scrutiny with a label of maintaining or improving their performance. Thirty-eight Phoenix schools, not including charter schools, were designated underperforming Tuesday.

Analysis Submitted by Sheldon Rampton on Wed, 12/29/2004 - 23:21.
Topics: education ALEC's 2004 Report Card on American Education The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a corporate-funded conservative advocacy group that specializes in lobbying state legislatures for enactment of favorable legislation, has issued a " 2004 Report Card on American Education" that provides an instructive example of the ways that industry-funded organizations manipulate information to reach foreordained conclusions. ALEC's report, which comes packaged with a glossy clip-art cover showing a pencil, ruler and other classroom implements, was authored by Andrew T. LeFevre, the President of LeFevre Associates, a PR/lobby firm based in northern Virginia. It was edited by Lori Drummer , who heads ALEC's education task force, which is "responsible for overseeing the development of ALEC policy related to education reform and school choice programs" - euphemisms for school privatization , which ALEC advocates.

The seeds for the Festival-in-the-Schools program are sown one summer when a collaborative program between Pima Community College and The Screening Room was initiated. In an effort to expose independent media to Tucson youth, 100 students from Cholla, Pueblo, Tucson High, Wakefield, Pistor and Maxwell middle School attended a series of programs highlighting different aspects of independent production.
During the summer months, The Screening Room programmed the Kids Film Fest for families as an alternative to Hollywood blockbusters.
The Arizona International Film Festival invites three area high schools to participate in the 1998 festival. One hundred students attend screenings of independent films participating in the festival. Welcome to the Media Center at the Foundation for Blind Children
Designated by the Arizona Department of Education, the Arizona Instructional Resource Center is the state media center and library for all students in the State of Arizona who are blind or have a visual impairment. The AIRC provides adapted materials to its student clientele to help facilitate learning in the classroom, whether it be braille or large print text- and workbooks, recreational reading materials, or other adapted instructional materials and equipment, such as maps, rulers, games, braille writers, special paper, to name a few. Every effort is made to serve each student with the materials s/he may need in the classroom, in mainstreamed or other instructional settings. There is an annual library service fee per student for textbook provision, billed to the student's school district. One set of equipment per student is provided at no cost to the district. In the past two years, the AIRC has continued to grow: the annual student registration, completed for the Department of Education, recently passed the 1200 mark. In the 1997/98 school year, 190 students received AIRC's library services for their entire instructional needs, 136 in the large print medium and 54 in braille. The AIRC's continuing expansion is reflected by its production statistics, with over 100,000 braille pages and over 200,000 large print pages produced last year. The completion of the new computer library management system has greatly enhanced the AIRC's ability to offer state-of-the-art service to its clientele.

FBI raids Arizona schools
Brent Whiting/The Arizona
Republic FBI special agent Susan Herskovits keeps watch. p2pnet.net News:- The entertainment industry has finally gone beyond the pale. Yesterday, under the new, Hollywood-inspired Intellectual Property Task Force, FBI agents raided schools in Arizona, looking for 'pirate' music and movie contraband. In what may have been part of a nation-wide action, "Agents poured through data and records at a computer command center for the Deer Valley School District in the northwest Valley and blocked the office from the public," says an Arizona Republic story here "It was among other places in Arizona and 'quite a few other states' where sealed search warrants were served, the FBI said." "FBI agents raided the Deer Valley district's Administration Services Center, just south of Deer Valley High School in Glendale, at 6 a.m. and stayed most of the day. The site houses the district's information services and technology offices, essentially the 'brains' of the district's computer system, said Timothy Tait, district spokesman."
