The Arizona Forum on Media Ownership On the afternoon of Monday, April 7, 2003, in Tempe, AZ, the Benton Foundation hosted the Arizona Forum on Media Ownership at the KAET public broadcasting television studio. The forum addressed the current federal review of the nation's media ownership rules under consideration by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The event provided 150 citizens of Arizona as well as several hundred citizens from across the US tuning in via the Internet with an opportunity to learn about and provide input on the issue. Below you will find a summary of the event, as well as the official agenda and panel biographies follow. An audio archive of the forum will be online soon. SUMMARY To start the program, Dean Anne Schneider of Arizona State University welcomed the audience and thanked them for attending. A statement was also read on behalf of Congressman J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ) with the following message: My background in broadcasting has helped me recognize the importance of both broadcast and print media. The FCC has opened a public debate on possible changes to the existing media ownership rules which this forum will address. Vigorous discussion and debate on these potential changes is part of what makes our democratic system in America so special. Following the welcoming statements, Benton Foundation Board Chairman Charles Benton addressed the crowd and quoted at length from

Window Media 9 Series in Education
Microsoft's new end-to-end digital media platform gives schools and institutions the ability to improve the student experience through higher quality audio and video delivered with lower bandwidth requirements. Here are just a few of the benefits with Windows Media 9 Series:
  • Buffering is virtually eliminated and users can speed up or slow down content playback, allowing students to quickly browse libraries of content.
  • Audio and video is optimized at any connection speed, so students are assured the best experience even at dial-up rates.
  • Server-side playlists enable campus Intranet TV producers to dynamically change streaming content on the fly.
These are but a few of the many new features that will empower educators and instructional designers to expand and enhance teaching and learning.

Watch Sample Student Content learning how to use new software and devices for staff and teachers. Students benefit from receiving enhanced classroom instruction, and learn to create their own rich media content using Microsoft tools.
Situation
Deploying educational technology tools that will improve student outcomes and employee efficiency is the mission of PUSDs Department of Technology. Currently each classroom has a teacher workstation; the elementary schools include a K-6th grade technology lab and 7th-8th grade technology lab; and each high school is equipped with four to five technology labs. All desktops and labs are rich with software and devices.
To better utilize the tools available in labs and on workstations, the district needed to find a simple and cost-effective way to train teachers and staff to use new technologies. In addition to training, PUSD wanted to provide tools to teachers, students, and district staff that would facilitate the use of rich media in the classroom and community.

KIDS AND TEACHERS ARE NOT LAB RATS!
ROBINA SUWOL, 25.07.2005 20:41 AB 405 California law allows pesticide products that do not have full registration and outstanding data requirements to be applied on school sites. This glaring oversight in the law may expose school children, teachers and other members of the public to unknown health risks. Pesticides contain toxic substances, many of which have a detrimental effect on human health and the environment and, in particular, have a developmental effect on children. On Monday Dec. 6th, three counter-recruiters drove to South Mountain High School on 7th St. and Broadway and handed out about 100 flyers. We started on the west side of campus and when the flow of kids leaving school seemed kind of slow we moved one counter-recruiter to the north side and learned that a lot of kids leave from that side. Three people flyering seemed to be enough. Security was minimal. Then on Monday Dec. 13th, two counter-recruiters drove to Carl Hayden High School on 35th Ave and the I-10. We arrived late, never a good idea. After talking to the Principal(who was standing outside) and giving him our literature(which he greedily read), we proceeded to hand out about 150 flyers. The north entrance is very busy with kids leaving school. If six counter-recruiters were present we could have handed out 500 copies. School security was everywhere and very, very polite. The AZCRC has meetings every sunday at the Gentle Strength co-op. The meetings start at 6:30 or 7pm.

About 250 flyers with information against military recruiters and JROTC were handed out. This action was done at the request of three students of Agua Fria who are interested in starting their own counter-recruitment group on campus. Students we met were very receptive to the literature and several students voiced their concerns to us about military recruiters being on campus every week. One student told us she thought recruiters were at Agua Fria a lot because of the large immigrant and minority population at the school. So true. The action was a success and we even dropped off some literature for the Carl Hayden High School career center on the way home.
