About this Blog
  • Morph, The Media Center blog, is a forum for new ideas and events related to digital media, convergence, and how society informs itself, tells its story and creates the narrative from which we extract context and meaning about our world, our neighbors and ourselves. This is about media in the broadest sense - institutions and individuals - and how media, either empowered or disrupted by technology, can contribute to or drive social change. We're on the prowl for innovation, experiments and glimmers of hope for a better-informed society in a connected world. We welcome guest bloggers and pointers to interesting blog posts and news (send to gpan@mediacenter.org ), and links and trackbacks back to our blog. Updated daily, M-F.

Big High schools striving for small-school ambiance Other coaches and student advisers will be expected to do the same, said Jack Dillard, principal of Sandra Day O'Connor High School, Deer Valley's newest high school. "I want this to be a personable school," Dillard said. "One where kids feel connected." Making large high schools feel small, intimate and personable is the latest trend in high school education, where enrollment can top 2,500 students. For decades, high schools have been departmentalized, run like small colleges. Teachers weren't expected to find out why a kid didn't turn in his paper; they only knew that he didn't. Now, high schools are being divided into "houses" or "schools within a school." Throughout the Valley, incoming freshmen are being given the royal treatment at orientations, and some schools are asking upperclassmen to be a buddy, mentor and tutor to underclassmen.

WELCOME TO THE FBC MEDIA CENTER
Designated by the Arizona Department of Education, the Arizona Instructional Resource Center is the state media center and library for all students in the State of Arizona who are blind or have a visual impairment. The AIRC provides adapted materials to its student clientele to help facilitate learning in the classroom, whether it be braille or large print text- and workbooks, recreational reading materials, or other adapted instructional materials and equipment, such as maps, rulers, games, braille writers, special paper, to name a few. Every effort is made to serve each student with the materials s/he may need in the classroom, in mainstreamed or other instructional settings. There is an annual library service fee per student for textbook provision, billed to the student's school district. One set of equipment per student is provided at no cost to the district. In the past two years, the AIRC has continued to grow: the annual student registration, completed for the Department of Education, recently passed the 1200 mark. In the 1997/98 school year, 190 students received AIRC's library services for their entire instructional needs, 136 in the large print medium and 54 in braille. The AIRC's continuing expansion is reflected by its production statistics, with over 100,000 braille pages and over 200,000 large print pages produced last year. The completion of the new computer library management system has greatly enhanced the AIRC's ability to offer state-of-the-art service to its clientele.

Center for Educational Opportunity
I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. -Thomas Jefferson Op-Eds Studies Press Room Events At the Goldwater Institute, educational freedom is paramount. We believe that a market-based education system is necessary to safeguard liberty, and that it is the fundamental right and responsibility of a free people to secure and direct their children's educations. Now more than ever, the need to exercise that right is great. Despite endless increases in spending and countless reforms, student achievement declines. Under the current system, the state assigns children to schools, bureaucrats pick textbooks, arbitrary standards drive curriculum and the establishment passes the buck when students fail. The solution? School choice.
