Abstract
The growth of geographic information systems (GIS) technology within academic disciplines has been mirrored in the past decade within libraries. The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) GIS literacy project, initiated in 1992, is widely regarded as the impetus for the spread of GIS-related services in academic libraries. Libraries have utilized a wide range of approaches, from setting up single dedicated GIS workstations to establishing GIS labs and creating positions for a GIS specialist. Taking the idea of GIS services one step further, the University of Arizona Libraries has created the Arizona Electronic Atlas an innovative, web-based interactive mapping resource that allows users to create, manipulate and download accurate and current maps and data. This paper describes the background and development of the Atlas, as well as its reference and instructional applications.
Introduction
GIS (Geographical Information Systems) technology is an innovation that has evolved rapidly from its beginnings in the 1960s. It allows users to view, manipulate, analyze and display geospatially-referenced data in graphic form (typically maps). GIS requires hardware, software, and data, as well as training on the part of the user. (

Setting Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is located along the Mexican border in southwestern Arizona equidistant from Tucson, Phoenix and Yuma. It runs 40 to 50 miles from both east-to-west and north-to-south, encompassing some 500 square miles. Most of the Monument is situated between the Ajo Mountain Range to the east and the Puerto Blanco Mountains to the west, with the Senita Plain extending west from here into the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge.
Climate Temperatures between October and April are normally 60 to 70 degrees F, but during May through September often exceed 105 degrees. Nights are considerably cooler than days throughout the year.
This region of the Sonoran Desert has two annual rainy seasons. December through March usually has gentle rains, while thunderstorms are likely during August and September, accounting for an annual average precipitation of 9.5 inches. Rain gear is recommended for park visitors during these months. At elevations ranging between 2,000 and 4,000 feet, temperatures are likely to vary greatly, especially season to season. Be prepared with sunscreen, hats and plenty of water.

The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery
