Abstract
The growth of geographic information systems (GIS) technology within academic disciplines has been mirrored in the past decade within libraries. The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) GIS literacy project, initiated in 1992, is widely regarded as the impetus for the spread of GIS-related services in academic libraries. Libraries have utilized a wide range of approaches, from setting up single dedicated GIS workstations to establishing GIS labs and creating positions for a GIS specialist. Taking the idea of GIS services one step further, the University of Arizona Libraries has created the Arizona Electronic Atlas an innovative, web-based interactive mapping resource that allows users to create, manipulate and download accurate and current maps and data. This paper describes the background and development of the Atlas, as well as its reference and instructional applications.
Introduction
GIS (Geographical Information Systems) technology is an innovation that has evolved rapidly from its beginnings in the 1960s. It allows users to view, manipulate, analyze and display geospatially-referenced data in graphic form (typically maps). GIS requires hardware, software, and data, as well as training on the part of the user. (

April 2002 Using LibQUAL+ TM

In 1993, the University of Arizona Library restructured into teams to become a more customer-focused learning organization. We are currently using LibQUAL+ TM as a tool to listen to customers and understand their expectations. We would like to share how we have utilized our results from the spring 2000 and 2001 surveys and some of the barriers encountered in doing so. Background
The University of Arizona Library has 11 functional teams responsible for services to specific or general customer groups; each team is charged with assessing needs and evaluating current services. The first of the 11 teams to use LibQUAL+ TM data in setting performance measures was the Strategic Long Range Planning (SLRP) Team. This team is responsible for overall library planning, including establishing goals and multi-year performance measures for the library. SLRP also allocates money to strategic projects. An important component of the strategic planning process is data collection that includes the Current Situation Analysis, a local effort to describe the current and future situation of the library. The Current Situation Analysis consists of an environmental scan identifying opportunities for and threats to the library and an internal assessment recognizing the library's strengths and weaknesses. Purpose of LibQUAL+ TM
LibQUAL+ TM is a tool for evaluating service effectiveness from the customer's perspective. We use LibQUAL+

Journal of Insect Science, Published by the University of Arizona Library, Introduces a No-Cost Electronic Alternative

May 14, 2001 For more information, contact:
Alison Buckholtz at 202-296-2296 x115 or alison@arl.org Washington, DC SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) today announced its partnership with the Journal of Insect Science, an electronic journal available free of charge and published by the University of Arizona Library. Journal of Insect Science (JIS) is the first SPARC partner journal to be published by a university library. JIS is accessible online at: http://www.insectscience.org The Journal of Insect Science debuted in March 2001. SPARC, an alliance of libraries that supports economical alternatives to high-priced journals, will help enlist library support for the journal. "As a faculty member at the University of Arizona, I've been involved in an ongoing dialogue with the library about ways the faculty and the library can work together to our mutual benefit," said Henry Hagedorn, editor of the Journal of Insect Science. "The University of Arizona Library was an early SPARC supporter and is very aware of the need for low-cost alternative journals in the scientific marketplace. It was ready to make the leap to becoming a publisher, and the collaboration creates a model that other editors and editorial boards can follow." "The University of Arizona Library has taken the lead in facilitating new models of scientific communication because we feel a responsibility to provide a service to the research community," said Carla Stoffle, Dean of Libraries, University of Arizona. "When faculty and the library create competitive publishing avenues, they provide options for editors, for authors, and for readers. In addition, these new publications give subscriber libraries a high-quality, low-cost choice that didn't exist before. Perhaps even more important, journals like this create new opportunities for scholar-library partnerships which enhance the learning and research programs of our institutions, and the responsiveness of the library to researcher needs."
