The Campaign to Save Arizona's School Libraries Committee and the Teacher-Librarian Division of the Arizona Library Association offered an advocacy event to meet the goals and objectives listed below. The Virtual Tour was held on: Tuesday, 9 March 2004
from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. (continous showings)
in the State Library's Conference Room (#200)
on the Second Floor of the Old Capitol Building
1700 West Washington,
Phoenix
The tour spotlighted the exciting collaborations between students, classroom teachers, and teacher-librarians, which are occurring in today's professionally-staffed Arizona school libraries. Using Tucson-area and Douglas, Arizona school libraries as examples, the tour also showed the vast inequities in facilities, funding, and professional staffing in libraries. Professional teacher-librarians, who answered decision-makers' questions and spoke from personal experience about their work with students, teachers, and school communities, guided the Virtual Tour. Other concerned educators and a school board member were also on hand to share their concerns for students' access to literacy resources and library programs. Student-work displays showing standards-based classroom-library collaborations were featured.

Resources for Library History Friends of the Library, The University of Arizona The University enrolled its first students in October 1891. The university library began as a collection of agriculture, mining, and engineering books housed in the office of Frank A. Gulley, dean of the school of agriculture. Most of the first one hundred accessions, including volumes of The American Cyclopaedia: A Popular Dictionary of General Knowledge (N.Y.: D. Appleton, 1883) still survive. By 1893 the library had grown to seven hundred volumes and had its first librarian, English professor Howard J. Hall. It moved to its own room in 1896 and relocated to its first freestanding building, constructed “to last for all time,” in 1904. Growing collections precipitated the move to a larger building in 1925 and that building expanded in 1963. A separate science engineering library was constructed in 1963 and then enlarged by the addition of two floors in 1971. The main library was relocated to its present structure in 1977, where it continues to build its collections to meet the needs of faculty and students. Today the University of Arizona Library holds no more than 4 million volumes and stands twenty-first in the Association of Research Libraries’ rankings for collection size.

Progressive Arizona Library Will Install Horizon System from Dynix

Glendale Public Library Chooses Horizon for Advanced Functionality
Glendale Public Library (GPL) sought a new automation system that would deliver state-of-the-art functionality and provide users with enhancements to improve patron self-service and provide increased power and flexibility in searching. Though GPL released an RFP and accepted bids from other vendors, the library decided that Dynix would best meet its technology needs and goals, now and in the future.
"Horizon was the leading system, consistently outscoring the other vendors using the criteria of our RFP," said Technical Services Manager Cherrilynn Moore. "More so than other options, we decided that Horizon would achieve our expectations for meeting staff requirements and for providing premiere service to our users." Moore said the GPL staff was particularly pleased with the acquisitions, serials, and cataloging modules in Horizon, as well as with the hardware configuration options provided by Dynix. With the installation of Horizon, GPL will also implement Horizon Telephone Messaging, which will help the staff to more efficiently communicate with a growing patron base. "Dynix has served us very well since 1994, and we are looking forward to the additional benefits and functionality of Horizon," Moore said. "We're extremely excited about the move, and based on the support we've received from Dynix in the past, we are confident that the migration process will be smooth."

Jewelry History: A Core Bibliography
Notes
This comprehensive collection is being cataloged. Dirlam is concerned that many unique, irreplaceable books are brittle and also need original cataloging. The alum sized paper, the glues used, and the cover treatments are all factors. Judy Wood, acquisition librarian at the Fashion Institute of Technology Library (FIT) in New York City, reports there is no online catalog (OPAC). The library tries to acquire material whose formats will not need intense preservation. The most endangered items in the FIT Library are the journal and trade catalogs that span two centuries. Microfilm and microfiche replacements are sought in an effort to maintain the depth and scope of the collection. Lee Haddon, librarian at the United States Geological Survey Library, Reston, VA., reports there are over 200 boxes of materials collected by George F. Kunz relating to gemstones and jewelry that are not organized and in varying stages of brittleness. Haddon is seeking funds to catalog and preserve the Kunz Collection. The questions asked of each respondent:
  • What is the most difficult problem you encounter in the research process that relates to the accessibility of information?

    Napster/Docster + Libraries - OCLC/RLIN = MARCSTER?
I know I'm a bit late getting into this discussion, but I think Dan's on to a great idea. Let's take it even a step further - what if our integrated library systems had docster-type features for MARC records (or Dublin Core or other standards)? Envision a truly distributed worldcat - with records freely available (I get goosebumps just thinking of the possibility). Hmmm, such a system would be a worldcat killer. Could we create such a monster, um, MARCSTER?
