A ceremony announcing the EqualAccess Libraries initiative will take place on Thursday, October 9 at 10 a.m. at the Valencia Branch of the Tucson-Pima County Public Library in Tucson. Civic and corporate leaders, librarians and educators will gather to celebrate this exemplary public-private partnership.
"Arizona libraries are well-positioned to help citizens use technology for educational and economic benefit," said Kathryn McLaughlin, state director, Libraries for the Future. "There are exceptional library leaders in Arizona who are committed to ensuring that all residents are part of the information age. We're honored that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has recognized the importance of EqualAccess Libraries and delighted that the Qwest Foundation and State Library are partnering with us to enable Arizona libraries to further develop their capacity to meet the new and multiple needs of their communities."

LIBRARIES FOR THE FUTURE EXPANDS EQUALACCESS LIBRARIES PROGRAM IN ARIZONA
Arizona public libraries will benefit from the expansion of EqualAccess Libraries , a program developed by Libraries for the Future (LFF) that transforms libraries into centers for information and education, based on the needs of their communities. A three-year, $1.05 million challenge grant awarded to Libraries for the Future by the is the basis for establishing a network of EqualAccess Libraries in 6-10 states. In each participating state, local matching funding is required to complement the grant. Arizona has been selected to participate thanks to support from the Qwest Foundation and the A previous grant from the Qwest Foundation enabled LFF to introduce after-school technology-based programming for youth and technology literacy training for adults during the past two years at ten libraries from Sierra Vista to Mesa to Flagstaff. The success of the pilot Access programs in part fueled the national expansion, a broader effort that aims to strengthen libraries' connections to their communities, bring new users to libraries, implement programs in critical areas such as health information and lifelong learning, and ensure that the benefits of technology are relevant and accessible to all.
