Automobile Dependence, Gender and Inner-City Residence, and Travel Demand Management
Elizabeth K. Burns Current empirical work on automobile dependence, gender and inner-city residence, and travel demand management offers insights into this conference's agenda of spatial technologies, geographic information, and the city. Geographic information systems (GIS), as one spatial technology, are now in common use in numerous urban public agencies to monitor, evaluate, and develop diverse policies and programs. While these GIS efforts have been put in place as an enabling technology, the activities supported by these efforts have tangible connections with travel and communications technologies. These GIS efforts allow monitoring, evaluation, and development of changed urban accessibility. It is now possible to identify intended and unintended consequences for different geographically- and socially-defined urban population groups. This set of urban economic, social, and environmental issues is being addressed through spatial monitoring and analysis. These empirical research activities are described below with discussion of their possible extension. These initiatives can lead to wider applications of the geographic information sciences through expanded spatial analysis and modeling for more informed future decision making. 1. It was purchased from the city of London when the bridge was being replaced in for 2.5 million dollars. The bridge was disassembled, the stones marked, shipped to Lake Havasu City, and reassembled for another 7 million dollars. It opened again in October . Monitoring Colonias Along the United States-Mexico Border
U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 2004-3070 August 2004 The Colonias Monitoring Program provides a publicly accessible, binational, GIS database to enable civic leaders and c itizens to inventory, analyze, and monitor growth, housing, and infrastructure in border communities. High-technology tools are provided to support planning efforts and development along the border, using a sustainable and comprehensive approach. The collective information can be used by nongovernmental organizations in preparing grant and loan applications for community-improvement projects.. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in cooperation HUD defines colonias as rural neighborhoods within 150 miles of the border that lack adequate infrastructure or housing, as well as other basic services. The colonias typically have high poverty rates, making it difficult for residents to pay for roads, sanitary-water and sewer systems, minimum-standard housing, street lighting, and other services. Colonias are scattered along the border as makeshift settlements, commonly on private land. Because these settlements have been established outside the formally sanctioned governance of nearby cities and towns, colonias residents have traditionally struggled to gain access to the public services available in those communities.
