ARIZONA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION With over 29,000 members, the Arizona Education Association is by far the largest professional organization in Arizona. AEA was formed more than a century ago, in 1892, when a group of Arizona educators banded together to protest the use of 14-year-old textbooks. Since that time AEA has maintained its leading position in advocating for support of Arizona's public schools, improving the quality of public education through positive change, and improving the professional lives of teachers and school staff members. There are more than 150 local affiliated associations statewide such as the Mesa Education Association, Tucson Education Association and Flagstaff Education Association. More than a thousand educators and educational support personnel volunteer their services to their locals on behalf of the members. Association membership is open to employees of all Arizona public schools, college and university employees, retired educators, and college students studying to be teachers. If one of these categories includes you, we hope you'll join us soon. Contact us at the address listed below. AEA programs include professional development, bargaining and advocacy, government relations, communications and public relations, legal services, and special services. AEA actively participates in many education, business, and civic partnerships and coalitions as part of its mission to make Arizona's public schools the best in the nation.

Volume 1, Number 1 October/November 2003 home about us welcome news ... archive Arizona Foundation for Resource Education Finishes Second Year The Arizona Foundation for Resource Education began its second year in January, 2003. Formerly the Arizona Mining Association's educational program, the organization is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation whose mission is to promote understanding about natural resources and related industries by providing Arizona's K-12 teachers real-world, hands-on professional development opportunities that focus on the importance of Arizona's natural resources. Teachers have also participated in study tours emphasizing agriculture, water, and the connection of geology to reforestation on the Mollogon Rim. In late June the Foundation staff and over a dozen natural resource organizations and businesses facilitated a brand-new event, the Arizona Studies Academy, at Northern Arizona University. Educators working as teams studied agriculture, built environments, forestry, mining, natural environments, and utilities and then developed classroom plans and projects using their new knowledge. The Foundation finished its summer with the very popular Copper Connections experience in central Phoenix in late July. This weeklong event that focuses on Arizona's geology, its mineral wealth and the importance of the state's mining industry, has become one of the hallmarks of the Foundation's educational program. Said participant, Christine Bailey, Sonoma Ranch Elementary School librarian, "The amount of information dispensed and the knowledge imparted to us was tremendous. I'm encouraged and ready to get back to work." The professional development experience has been attended by over 1,600 teachers since 1994.

Long-Term Professional Development
Plan Six 2-day workshops Over A Three Year Period Or Develop a Plan Workshop-by-Workshop Critical thinking is not an isolated goal unrelated to other important goals in education. Rather, it is a seminal goal which, done well, simultaneously facilitates a rainbow of other ends. It is best conceived, therefore, as the hub around which all other educational ends cluster. For example, as students learn to think more critically, they become more proficient at historical, scientific, and mathematical thinking. They develop skills, abilities, and values critical to success in everyday life. All of this assumes, of course, that those who teach have a solid grounding in critical thinking and in the teaching strategies essential to it. We agree. It is clear that there is no way to bring critical thinking successfully into instruction across the curriculum with a stand-alone one or two-day workshop. At best, a one or two-day workshop can do three things:
