New Arizona State center brings science to policy on issues of water resources and urban growth
Decision Center for a Desert City will help cities face critical decisions on growth and water usage
TEMPE, Ariz. – A new $6.9-million center at Arizona State University will study the decision processes used to plan and manage water resources and desert city growth. The center, called the Decision Center for a Desert City, could have a profound effect on the future directions of urban growth in arid regions by providing a sound scientific basis to the decisions that balance growth with finite water resources.
The Decision Center for a Desert City (DCDC) is one of three new National Science Foundation-funded centers that will investigate human decision-making under climatic uncertainty. The impact of the NSF centers could be felt for years to come as populations move to areas that struggle to achieve sustainability.
"DCDC is a model of our commitment to research with a purpose, which in this case is ensuring a sustainable future for our desert regions," said Arizona State University President Michael M. Crow. "ASU's expertise in climate science, water usage, science and technology policy, and our studies on the effects of urban growth all come into play as we focus on this increasingly important issue of sustainability in arid regions. We know that growth in areas such as ours is exacerbating the impact of existing drought conditions, making decisions on growth and sustainability critically important to this region and others like it."

Political Reform projects are designed to improve the fairness and responsiveness of governmental processes through research, strategic consulting, legislative drafting and publication. Sustainable Communities projects are designed to improve citizens' lives through education and information on important policy issues. Updated Summary Chart of Local Public Financing Laws Now Available The Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) has just released an updated, comprehensive series of charts outlining public financing laws in cities and counties across the nation. These charts are a part of the CGS series, " Public Financing in American Elections ," a multi-year comparative research project on the effectiveness of public financing laws adopted in local jurisdictions in the United States. Currently twelve cities and counties have public financing laws. Tucson, Arizona has the oldest such law, adopted in 1985. In May 2005, Portland, Oregon became the most recent city to enact a public financing law and the first in the country to adopt a full public financing program, which means that the city government provides all of the financial resources necessary for qualified local candidates to run for public office. The Department of Mathematics offers graduate study leading to the Ph.D. and the M.A. degrees in many areas of mathematics. In particular, the department has strengths in algebra, analysis, computational mathematics, control and system science, differential equations, discrete mathematics, dynamical systems and chaos, mathematical biology, mathematics education, number theory, and statistics. The department also participates in the Master of Science degree in statistics and the Master of Natural Science (M.N.S.) degree for interdisciplinary study, for which a thesis is not required. In collaboration with the College of Education, the Department of Mathematics offers a new option for the M.N.S. that leads to high school certification. The Community
The state of Arizona is famous worldwide for its great natural beauty, from Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon in the north to the Sonoran Desert in the south. The University is centrally located in Tempe, one of several neighboring cities occupying the wide expanse of the Salt River Valley (known locally as the Valley of the Sun). The population of Tempe is close to 150,000, and the city combines the advantages of a moderate-sized, university-oriented community with the cultural and technical resources of a major metropolitan area. Phoenix is home to major electronics and aerospace industries, to the mutual benefit of the company and the University.

... For the Public and Prospective Students Annual Message
from the Accreditation Commission August 2004
Jeff Raffel, Chair, Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation

The Fall of 2003 marked the submission of 24 self studies. One more school withdrew from the accreditation program and did not submit a self study. An additional six schools submitted materials to the Commission for reconsideration following one year reaccreditations. One school receiving a one-year reaccreditation during 2002-03 had a second site visit during 2003-04.
This academic year, 2004-05, COPRA anticipates the smallest cohort of the seven-year cycle: twenty schools. The cohort is small simply because of the accident of history when various groups of schools came into the accreditation process.
    2003-04 Site Visits
COPRA continues to pursue four goals for site visit selection: good matching of site visitors to schools, sufficient pool and nominations to yield a successful team of three for each school, access to the process by new site visitors, and diversity. The Commission also has a goal that every site visitor will be adequately trained and will be provided with the information, advice, and materials necessary to be a valuable participant on the visit.
    • MATCH
COPRA’s matching was extremely successful this year. Among schools receiving site visits in 2003-04 who completed an evaluation (n=17), their average rating of the site team match (appropriateness of the individuals and the three-person mix to that particular program) was 4.2, with 4 designating “excellent” and 5 “truly outstanding”
