During his term as president, Dr. Haeger has led the university as it emphasized the integration of technology in teaching and student services. He also has strengthened the university's ties to Arizona's rural students who receive their educations through NAU's distance learning programs. Among his other achievements:
  • Academic restructuring consolidated the number of colleges from 10 to six. It also assigned NAU's research centers and institutes to the college that most closely reflects their missions. This alignment of the centers and institutes further integrated teaching and research to the benefit of undergraduate and graduate students. A renewed emphasis on marketing . Designed to shine a light on NAU's many attributes, the effort included an 18-month research analysis to discover perceptions and realities about the university. It also included a new university logo and color combination. "We cannot afford to remain a hidden treasure," Haeger has said. New capital improvement projects include student housing, Communication and Business buildings as well as a remodeled Engineering building and the new Applied Research and Development facility, which is seeking a platinum rating for environmental design from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building rating system.

Two Trustees for Distinguished Service
Board Leaders From Arizona, Ohio Are Recognized Jack B. Jewett Jewett was named to the Arizona Board of Regents in 1998 and served as its president from 2002 to 2003. His year as board president was marked by fundamental change. When Jewett assumed the presidency in 2002, the university system had been severely stressed by large increases in enrollments, deep budget cuts, diminishing state support, turnover of faculty and staff, and mounting costs of deferred maintenance. Charles P. Bolton Award Criteria Institution chief executives, board members, staff and members of the campus community may nominate individuals for the Distinguished Service Award. An independent panel of judges selects the winners. The judges look for individuals who not only discharge their basic responsibilities with distinction but go beyond the minimal expectations trustees typically hold for one another. In addition to the individual honors, the nominating institutions each receive an unrestricted grant of $25,000.
