Alternative Schools VisionQuest Alternative Schools are designed to provide education and treatment services to troubled students who have not been successful in their regular public school setting. Truancy, disruptive behavior, and violence are problems confronting school districts on a regular basis. While many districts have sought to expel or exclude these students from school, this is not a long term solution to the problem. Expulsion only gives students an excuse to hang out in the streets to commit further acts of crime, and most alternative school programs are not adequately addressing the issues. Troubled students require a comprehensive program that meets their academic, emotional, and social needs. They need a safe environment where they can learn and grow and eventually develop the necessary skills to become productive members of society. VisionQuest Alternative Schools provide this type of an environment where students have the opportunity to be successful and to improve both their academic and behavioral skills. All VisionQuest alternative schools follow a Basic Education high school curriculum and are accredited, licensed, and/or approved by the jurisdictions served. At VisionQuest, emphasis is placed on:

Finding new breed of teachers Pilot certifies people from other fields Carrie Watters
The Arizona Republic
Aug. 3, 2005 12:00 AM Marguerite Hinojosa recently gave up a fast-paced job producing Good Morning Arizona for a new adrenaline rush: teaching high school students.
The 47-year-old newswoman is one of six Arizona teachers in a new state program that puts people with career experience, but not the typical education background, into classrooms. If the two-year pilot succeeds, traditional public high school students may find more non-traditional teachers in their classrooms.
About 48 states have experimented with ways to certify non-traditional teachers. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
Arizona has explored alternative methods before. This is the first attempt under state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne. Under the pilot program, called Alternative Secondary Path to Certification, candidates who hold bachelor's degrees in non-teaching fields can land in classrooms as full-time paid teachers after intensive summer training. "I never knew what would give me the rush that chasing a news story gave me," Hinojosa said.

http://www.prescott.k12.az.us/az_tax_credit.htm
Home Prescott Unified School District No. 1 Arizona School Tax Credit It's a win-win for you and our schools. The State of Arizona has a law that benefits taxpayers and school children alike. A.R.S. 43-1089 allows a tax credit of $200 for individuals and $300 for married couples, filing jointly, for fees or donations paid to a public school in support of extracurricular activities or character education programs. And you don't have to have a child in the school district to benefit from the tax credit program. How it works The tax credit reduces your tax liability by the amount you donate. If you donate $300 to an eligible school activity, you reduce your Arizona state tax bill by $300. If you expect a refund, it will be $300 higher. If you don't pay state income tax, you can't reduce your liability below $0. So many programs in need of support Last year, taxpayers helped cover the costs of field trips, after-school programs, admission to plays, concerts, parks, museums and nature camps, and music, art and physical education programs. Simply put, tax credit donations make possible a wide range of learning opportunities that our children would not otherwise have. Remember, you don't have to have a child in the school to benefit from this tax credit. You may choose where you would like your money to be used. To claim the tax credit, taxpayers must contribute to an extracurricular activity for which the school district requires a fee.

Curricula on smoking subpoenaed: Big Arizona districts complain as tobacco firms pursue evidence
By Michael Murphy September 18, 1998
The nation's top tobacco companies have subpoenaed Arizona's largest school districts, demanding a broad range of materials used since 1950 to educate students about the dangers of smoking. Arizona's largest district, Mesa Unified, is fighting the subpoena as "unduly burdensome" and potentially costly. Three others, Paradise Valley, Peoria and Phoenix Elementary, also have filed objections. And the director of a national anti-smoking group accused the tobacco companies of using the subpoenas as a harassment technique to fight Arizona's $500 million tobacco lawsuit. "You just can't say, 'Hell no,' " to a subpoena," said John Banzhaf, executive director of Action on Smoking and Health and a professor of law of George Washington University. Paul Eckstein, an attorney for Brown Williamson, denied he was trying to harass the schools. We don't need to see...every last book, but I think we've got a pretty good idea of what several school districts taught 30 to 40 years ago. - Paul Eckstein, an Attorney for Brown Williamson
