Arizona's Tobacco Education and Prevention Program (AzTEPP) in the Department of Health Services began in January 1996. The program aims to keep all youth and pregnant women in Arizona tobacco free, protect residents from the hazards of environmental tobacco smoke, and provide modern, affordable services to those who wish to quit smoking. Funded by statewide tobacco excise tax revenues, the program has a step-by-step calendar to accomplish these goals by 2001. Project activities are coordinated through community coalitions, and local schools. Youth access to tobacco and merchant education are also addressed through the local initiatives. Local outcomes will be measured in biennial adult and youth tobacco use surveys. The ad campaign is viewed as a national model and is being replicated in several other states. AzTEPP has a toll-free hotline for smoking cessation (1-800-556-6222), as well as a resource clearinghouse (1-800-432-2772), and an Internet site: http://www.tepp.org

http://www.nwrel.org/nwedu/summer_98/article9.html
MERIDIAN, Idaho— When science teacher Larry Ford got the phone call about a job opening at Meridian Academy alternative high school, "right away the red flags went up," he recalls. He pictured "kids with chains, motorcycles, Hell's Angels." The Hollywood-inspired images of knife-wielding hoodlums troubled the bookish teacher, whose last job was in Scottsdale, an affluent Arizona suburb where "Mama is a brain surgeon, Daddy's a corporate lawyer" and Junior is headed to Stanford or Harvard. "I am not streetwise," Ford confesses, recalling the trepidation he felt at confronting a classroom full of at-risk students. "I thought, 'Those kids'll eat me up.'" A single day at the academy vanquished Ford's misconceptions. The students he found at Meridian were familiar to him—not from movies and TV, but from big, traditional high schools. They are the "church-mouse quiet" kids who sit at the rear of packed classrooms, unnoticed. Sometimes they sleep at their desk. Often they're absent. They fall farther and farther behind while their teachers, unaware of their troubles, are "going 100 miles an hour" through the mandated curriculum. "I was looking at those little faces," Ford says, "and I recognized them immediately. I thought, 'I know you. You're the kids that weren't getting the attention.' All of a sudden, I realized these were good kids—these were good kids. It was the exact opposite of that image I had in my mind."

Coordinators work with 40-50 students each school year. Program coordinators provide nine months of in-school services to each student participant, in addition to 12 months of follow-up assistance after graduation. The services they offer include:

Escape From Gangsta Island: The Progressive Decline of an Alternative School, Part 2 By Bernard Chapin On another occasion, during an adolescent development class, I heard a student remark on a reading I passed out. He didn’t even leaf through it after saying it was “from Hoover Institute.” I asked him what that he meant. He said that Hoover was a conservative think tank. No additional analysis was added as follow up. To him, labeling it conservative was reason enough to ignore it. Since he had a different ideological viewpoint he assumed that every word in the document was a lie. I asked him if that meant that we should ever read things we did not agree with and he did not answer me.[j] In my opinion, it is counter-productive, and counter-intuitive, to hold that there is no worth in inspecting your opponent’s ideas. Many people who disagree with me still have a myriad of things to contribute to the marketplace of ideas. I have profited by opening my mind to the writings of certain leftists like Christopher Hitchens and Michael Walzer. Knowing their positions has helped me prune and strengthen my own or as Hitchens stated more authoritatively

Arizona Natural Medical School
Does Arizona have an accredited medical school in alternative medicine? What is the difference between conventional medical school and natural medical school or alternative medical school? As an alternative medical school, Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine trains students to become Naturopathic doctors. Students are educated in the same basic science coursework as in conventional medical schools. Our alternative medical school, trains physicians or doctors to be more than clinicians; we train our physicians to be health coaches. As a natural medical school, the education program is enhanced through technology and an innovative teaching approach utilizing clinicians in the classroom and guest lecturers. Our alternative medical school is a unique college of healthcare where students are trained in preventive and natural health care. How can graduates practice medicine?
