Most computers today support binary floating-point in hardware. While suitable for many purposes, binary floating-point arithmetic should not be used for financial, commercial, and user-centric applications or web services because the decimal data used in these applications cannot be represented exactly using binary floating-point. (See the Frequently Asked Questions pages for more explanation and examples.) The problems of binary floating-point can be avoided by using base 10 (decimal) exponents and preserving those exponents where possible. This site describes a decimal arithmetic which achieves the necessary results and is suitable for both hardware and software implementation. It brings together the relevant concepts from a number of ANSI, IEEE, ECMA, and ISO standards , and conforms to the proposed decimal formats and arithmetic in the current draft of the ongoing IEEE 754 revision Notably, a single data type can be used for integer, fixed-point, and floating-point decimal arithmetic, and the design permits compatible fixed-size and arbitrary-precision implementations. For the background and rationale for the design, see

Anderson Prime Arithmetic Progression An arithmetic progression of primes is a set of primes of the form for fixed and and consecutive , i.e., . For example, 199, 409, 619, 829, 1039, 1249, 1459, 1669, 1879, 2089 is a 10-term arithmetic progression of primes with difference 210. It had long been conjectured that there exist arbitrarily long sequences of primes in arithmetic progression (Guy 1994). As early as 1770, Lagrange and Waring investigated how large the common difference of an arithmetic progression of primes must be. In 1923, Hardy and Littlewood (1923) made a very general conjecture known as the k -tuple conjecture about the distribution of prime constellations , which includes the hypothesis that there exist infinitely long prime arithmetic progressions as a special case. Important additional theoretical progress was subsequently made by van der Corput (1939), who proved than there are infinitely many triples of primes in arithmetic progression, and Heath-Brown (1981), who proved that there are infinitely many four-term progressions consisting of three primes and a number that is either a prime or semiprime However, despite all this labor, proof the general result for arbitrarily long sequences of primes has remained an open conjecture (Guy 1994, p. 15). Thanks to new work by Ben Green and Terence Tao, the conjecture seems to finally have been settled in the positive. In a recently published in preprint, Green and Tao (2004) use an important result known as

Presburger arithmetic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Presburger arithmetic is the first-order theory of the natural numbers with addition . It is not as powerful as the Peano axioms because multiplication is omitted. In fact, Mojzesz Presburger proved in that Presburger arithmetic is decidable . In other words, there is an algorithm which decides for any given statement in Presburger arithmetic whether it is true or not. No such algorithm exists for general arithmetic as a consequence of the negative answer to the Entscheidungsproblem . Furthermore, Presburger proved that his arithmetic is consistent (does not contain contradictions) and complete (every statement can either be proven or disproven). Again, such a proof cannot be given for general arithmetic; in fact, it follows from G¶del's incompleteness theorem that general arithmetic cannot be both consistent and complete. The decidability of Presburger arithmetic can be shown using quantifier elimination Presburger arithmetic is an interesting example in computational complexity theory and computation because Fischer and Rabin proved in that every algorithm which decides the truth of Presburger statements has a runtime of at least 2^(2^( cn )) for some constant c . Here

Arithmetic of abelian varieties
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In mathematics , the arithmetic of abelian varieties is the study of the number theory of an abelian variety , or family of those. It goes back to the studies of Fermat on what are now recognised as elliptic curves ; and has become a very substantial area both in terms of results and conjectures. Most of these can be posed for an abelian variety A over a number field K; or more generally (for global fields or more general finitely-generated rings or fields).

Integer points on abelian varieties
There is some tension here between concepts: integer point belongs in a sense to affine geometry , while abelian variety is inherently defined in projective geometry . The basic results proving that elliptic curves have finitely many integer points come out of diophantine approximation edit
Rational points on abelian varieties
The basic result ( Mordell-Weil theorem ) says that A(K), the group of points on A over K, is a finitely-generated abelian group . A great deal of information about its possible torsion subgroups is known, at least when A is an elliptic curve. The question of the
