On March 11, 1973, Argentina held general elections for the first time in 10 years. Peron was prevented from running, but voters elected his stand-in, Dr. Hector Campora, as President. Peron's followers also commanded strong majorities in both houses of Congress. Campora resigned in July 1973, paving the way for new elections. Peron won a decisive victory and returned as President in October 1973 with his third wife, Maria Estela Isabel Martinez de Peron, as Vice President. During this period, extremists on the left and right carried out terrorist acts with a frequency that threatened public order. The government resorted to a number of emergency decrees, including the implementation of special executive authority to deal with violence. This allowed the government to imprison persons indefinitely without charge. Peron died on July 1, 1974. His wife succeeded him in office, but a military coup removed her from office on March 24, 1976, and the armed forces formally exercised power through a junta composed of the three service commanders until December 10, 1983. The armed forces applied harsh measures against terrorists and many suspected of being their sympathizers. They restored basic order, but the human costs of what became known as "El Proceso," or the "Dirty War" were high. Conservative counts list between 10,000 and 30,000 persons as "disappeared" during the 1976-83 period. Serious economic problems, mounting charges of corruption, public revulsion in the face of human rights abuses and, finally, the country's 1982 defeat by the United Kingdom in an unsuccessful attempt to seize the Falklands/Malvinas Islands all combined to discredit the Argentine military regime. The junta lifted bans on political parties and gradually restored basic political liberties.

It was the worst terror attack in Argentina's history A court in Argentina has cleared five men accused of involvement in the bombing of a Jewish centre in 1994.
They had denied charges that they supplied a van used in the attacks. The reasons for their acquittal will not be made public until next month. The masterminds behind the blast, which killed 85 people and injured more than 200, have never been identified. Argentine, US and Israeli officials have all said that Iran is to blame - a charge Tehran denies. Second blast The defendants, four former police officers and an alleged car thief, had been dubbed the "local connection" by Argentine journalists. Prosecutors argued they were part of a car-stealing ring that delivered the vehicle which was then rigged with explosives outside the offices of the Jewish-Argentine Mutual Association or Amia, in Buenos Aires. One of the accused, Carlos Telleldin, is escorted into court

of Argentina
Background:
Argentina is the second-largest country in South America (after Brazil); its people are a fusion of diverse national and ethnic groups, with descendants of Italian and Spanish immigrants predominant.
Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and between civilian and military factions.
After World War II, a long period of Peronist authoritarian rule and interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976.

Description
About the Author Related Books "Insofar as Argentina has not yet solved the core problems of institutional and political mediation, Rock's book is more than a superb piece of scholarship: it is a warning and a diagnostic tool."Juan E. Corradi, American Historical Review "This book should be required reading for students of nationalism and the Latin American Right. It is well written and argued, carefully balancing close historical detail with broad genealogy."Jeremy Adelman, Hispanic American Historical Review "The most comprehensive treatment of the subject yet available. It will interest both Argentine specialists and those concerned with the evolution of conservative ideologies and movements throughout Latin America."Richard J. Walter, Washington University DESCRIPTION (back to top) David Rock has written the first comprehensive study of nationalism in Argentina, a fundamentalist movement pledged to violence and a dictatorship that came to a head with the notorious "disappearances" of the 1970s. This radical, right wing movement has had a profound impact on twentieth-century Argentina, leaving its mark on almost all aspects of Argentine lifeart and literature, journalism, education, the church, and of course, politics.

Argentina: Default by Any Name ...
Will Be the Biggest Ever
by Cynthia R. Rush The looming collapse of Argentina's $222 billion foreign debt would be that largest default in history, as Moody's Investors Service emphasized on Nov. 1. The government's long and terrible savaging of its own economy, rather than declare sovereign bankruptcy , has failed to avoid default; this trumpets to the world that Lyndon LaRouche's bankruptcy-reorganization policy must be adopted in place of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and similar "bailout" disasters. And it spotlights imprisoned Argentine military hero and LaRouche collaborator, Col. Mohammed Alí Seineldín, as the only national leader not discredited by Argentina's economic disasters and corruption of the past decade. The "voluntary and amicable" swap of public debt, proposed by President Fernando de la Rúa and his "Rasputin," Finance Minister Domingo Cavallo, did not console the international financial community. "Looks like default, smells like default, must be default," BCP Securities senior analyst Walter Molando said in remarks to Bloomberg financial agency on Oct. 30. "Argentina Signals Default On Foreign-Held Debt," Bloomberg trumpeted in its Oct. 29 coverage. Standard and Poor's now rates Argentine debt SD—"Selective Default." No one bought Cavallo's assurance that he was lining up guarantees for the deal of at least $7 billion from multilateral lending agencies, including the IMF, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. "Either he's lying to us, or he's thinking of a compulsory restructuring," one Argentine banker said to the daily

The question that probably occurs to everyone reading of Argentina's history is how can a country that has so much potential have had such a troubled history. The tragic complexity of the problems of Argentina reminds one of the tragedies of Polish history. But Polish problems developed out of and in reaction to the external pressures of its two aggressive neighbors whereas Argentina's troubles seem to be of its own people's contrivance. Perhaps there is a similar difficulty of Argentines and Poles to find compromises and to accept them. Argentine society arose out Spanish Empire institutions and the development of the natural resources of the plains, the Pampas. The land produced grain and cattle and the land was held by a few families in large estates. The oligarchy of leading families ruled and controlled the economy and politics of Argentina. The revenues of these families came from the export of beef and grain. They spent their earnings on imported products. They supported free trade. They encouraged immigration from Europe as a source of an educated work force which would develop the economy of Buenos Aires. The oligarchy wanted political stability and supported a strong central authority as a means of promoting that stability. Generally otherwise they wanted as little involvement of the government in the economy as possible. In a word, the oligarchs were classical liberals.
